It's real all right. The new airport out here (I'm leaving for Japan tomorrow BTW) is 10 years old - replacing the old one, Kai Tak, which was absolutely notorious for its approach, virtually flying between blocks of flats. I lived out here for 9 months about 15 years ago, and did it five times - the first time I was almost physically sick.
Here's a sample picture:
But the people in the picture though, they look completely unperturbed and there's no sand flying everywhere.

That is just beyond a joke! Who in their right mind would live in one of those flats?
You would not believe how many high rise blocks there are in Hong Kong. Some people live in what they call "cubicle" apartments, which doesn't leave much to the imagination.

China's new found wealth clearly isn't going to the people then!
Are the toilets over there holes in the ground that you have to squat over? I was told that by someone who went there.
YouTube is slow as hell in making their videos available, but this will eventually lead to a clip of me showing a beer can who's boss.

Duh.
Oh you're right it's not available yet
We'll just have to remember the thread and the page.

No but I thought it was different in Hong Kong from mainland China. I thought that's were all the new millionaires were living.

It'll probably be ready in a few minutes.
You can always watch this video:

It's me, the same friend (he filmed/edited the video) and several of my Army buddies at a reunion in Las Vegas about 11 years after we all left the military.

Partly true but not completely. The big and obvious difference is that this is now China, when before it was a British outpost. The wealth is redistributing, but because it's very much a financial based economy like the City of London you really have to work in the right sector...
And I used to bank on everybody speaking English but I can't rely on that nowadays.
One thing, though; the Chinese earn a fraction of what we do in the West, yet they manage to save money. Whereas in both the UK and the US personal debt has just skyrocketed. Tells you a bit about the way they live.
As far as the toilets go, probably in some of the further flung places, but I'm in a hotel as modern as anything in Britain.

Until recently. Fear of recession/depression will do that to ya.
U.S. household debt, which has been growing steadily since the Federal Reserve began tracking it in 1952, declined for the first time in the third quarter of 2008.

True everywhere, I'd imagine. I spent last weekend relieving myself in a dry riverbed.
About time too. I meant "just" skyrocketed as in "hugely", not "recently"
The video is working now:
