Can the Americans really do comedy? Page 4

I know what you mean, but everything deals with relationships, the relationships between the family in AD, it's just that Friends did it in a over the top soap opera type of way.

Yeah I should have worded it better. Most sitcoms deal with relationships but Friends was like you say over-the-top soap style relationships, all quite materialistic and not really any depth to them (I'm talking about like the characters dating other people, the actual 6 friends had a good relationship). Also Friends was very inconsistent when it came to its characters, contradicting past episodes a lot etc.

That was something that drove me crazy.

One thing that bugged me was that in the first episode, Chandler is introduced to Rachel as if they'd never met. Also, in the early seasons, (like when they show an old video of highschool prom and Monica is fat) Chandler is unaware of how she used to be big and cracks jokes. However, in season 6, suddenly they decided that Chandler and Ross had been friends since highschool, he had met Monica when he and Ross were in college, and he knew Rachel as well.

There are many other plot flaws, but that one always stuck out the most to me.

Still a great show though.

:)

Very true. The fact that it lasted 10 Seasons with barely any loss of comedic genius is pretty impressive.

Not my favorite show, but I do own all the seasons on DVD and I have to say, Chandler is one of the greatest characters ever created.

Could he be anymore greater?

Yes, he's called Ross, my favourite character.

In answer to the thread question: yes.

Every country can do comedy, yes even the little shitty ones like Fiji, (i chose Fiji because i'm sure no one is from Fiji here, if so i'm sorry, please don't eat me), every country has their own unique sense of humour, so the Americans can do comedy even if it doesn't appeal to some Brits it probably appeals tothem (you might not understand what i'm saying i do and that is what matters).

That's very true. I suppose it really just comes down to which country has the more original, intelligent comedy?

What's funny is that England has the two extremes. One comedy may take place in a government/business setting, make sly puns about the business world, and have no laughtrack. The other's joke may be that there is a man in women's clothing.

In America, we're more in the middle of the two, but it looks like we're starting to move up towards more intelligent comedy. I hope so...

They have given us Scrubs. For that I love them.

Come on man, you had Seinfeld and The Larry Sanders Show during the 90's, two very intelligent sitcoms. You also had Mr Show with Bob & David...a sketch show but still hilariously funny and smart.

Yeah but that was on HBO (the channel for rich people) Martin not the Networks. Wasn't there a sitcom with a talking Rabbit in the late 80s/ early 90. Thats pretty extreme isn't it.

Oh God. That piece of crap. It was a rip-off of a MUCH better show called "Married with Children".

I can't remember the name of it now...but boy did it suck.
