Can the Americans really do comedy? Page 11

Some American comedy from Saturday Night Live. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QorNahQa2QY

I can't stop watching it!

The guy in the middle is totally fascinating and hilarious (and yes I know who he is). The other two are great as well.

Try to watch it without "heading" along. If you can, you're depressed.

Ah yes. Old Saturday Night Live. What a gem. Too bad it's been incredibly PAINFUL to watch for the past 5 years.

Hello Luke, goodnight Luke Wave

The guy is the middle is some obscure actor, whats his name... Jim Carrey, thats the one. This is one of the greatest SNL sketches, the others being

Cowbell http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EVbAuMr5eac

Lazy Sunday http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=adA_wRR_GxE

I would love to write for SNL, wish we had something like it over here. Closest we have is panel shows.

Andy Samberg FTW! "Lazy Sunday" is fantastic and i adore Natalie Portman.

I would just like to say on this matter that there are quite alot of American Comedies that I can't watch simply because they make my teeth grind so much my dentist has warned me against them. However, Arrested Development and Family Guy are two modern comedies at the moment that make me laugh harder than almost any other.

Doesn't SNL get slated nowadays in the US. I haven't seen much of it, but I've heard it getting a bit of a hard time by other comedians/shows.

Obviously I'm referring to the recent years of the show, not the classics.

I've watched a VHS of 'The Best of Steve Martin', whom I love and worship as a comedy great, but I thought it was shit! I've watched the ones on ITV4 which must be about a year old, I also think they are shit.

The idea of SNL appealed to me, actually what I saw didn't. But SNL have produced some great talent, so for that, I think it's great.

SNL is an American institution. Been around since 1975. If you examine its history you will see there are some years when both the cast & writing were utter shite. It just happens sometimes. The good times will return.

For my money, the best years were those which featured Phil Hartman and Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey and Victoria Jackson.

Yea, it was only yesterday that I was moaning about the lack of an SNL show here in Britain. It's a great weekly vehicle for taking the piss out of current events and celebs. Could've made fun of Langham had we a show like it here...

Skib you really know what your talking about I totally agree. Yeah the recent ones have been poor but I thought Hugh Laurie did quite well on it when he appeared. The only really promising guy they have at the moment is Andy Sandburg and thats only really because of his digital shorts.

We did have our own version didn't we, Saturday Live which was quite successful but didn't last that long. It had acts like Mayall & Edmondsun, Ben Elton, Hugh Laurie etc.

We need a modern version, satire is dying on its arse at the moment with only Bremmner, Bird and Fortune and The Now Show keeping the British end up. Both of which do not really feature sketches heavily. If a commisioning editor is reading this then pull your finger out and create a show.

The head of Comedy at Channel 5 said he wanted to do something like SNL but it'd take about a year. I'm not sure that meant setting it up or convincing his other bosses.

Probably a year of each.

No, it would be a year of editing a topical script, if it's Channel 5.
