I love Leslie Thomas. Read all his books since Virgin Soldiers. Several have been televised including Tropic of Ruislip and the Dangerous Davies stories.
I also love Joseph Heller - Catch 22.(sory - just remembered this said British)

I'd nominate this as the funniest book ever.
I also like Something Happened by the same author, not least because it does Peep Show forty odd years before Peep Show.
Frank Richards, ANthony Buckeridge and the early Richmal Cromptons
I have some of the Magnet facsimilies - great objects!
Chuck Palahniuk is pretty good. And although not a novel Dave Eggars A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is very good. Pity the author hasn't been able to match it since.
Although to me, funniest foreign novelist must be Vladmir Nabakov. Lolita and Pale Fire are brilliant.
