I'm sure this is used for nefarious purposes by ner-do-wells but it's a good tool for character names. Even gives them a random bio too. Not sure the c redit card details are needed though... http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/index.php?c=uk&gen=male&n=en

That's ace - cheers Lee.
I don't know about anyone else, but I have real difficulty coming up with character names. I get torn between wanting the names to be idiosyncratic and intrinsically linked to the character and yet still believable.
Anyone got a special technique?
Pick one that seems alright.
Two months down the line, you won't be able to imagine anything different.
There's an interesting section in the book 'Freakonomics' that explains a bit about how parents choose names for their children. The author suggests that it's a keeping up with the Jones' thing i.e. names of children from nearby wealthier more successful families seem to be chosen (at least in America). There are lists of the most popular names for girls and boys through the last few decades. I'm sure you can find lists online of popular names from different years - perhaps this might be useful? I think that someone's name can sometimes suggest something about their socio-economic grouping and maybe a bit about what their parents are like. Perhaps though nicknames say more about someone's personality
Weird thing was the first three names generated were names that had high significance in my life.
This will come in handy for me - I'm shit at coming up with names for characters.
I've usually find myself reading all the credits, at the end of T.V. shows and fils, trying to find good names. I've actually got a massive list, of the best ones. One rule I do have, is that I won't try to get a augh from giving a character a wacky name. I think that's just too damn corny. The worst examples of this are when a married couple have wacky names, eg Bill and Ben, the parents, from 2 Point 4 Children, or Kath Day and Kel Knight, from Kath and Kim.
