Skins Page 2

Erm theres a difference between running commercials for a show and it being commercial. E4 took the time and money to make Skins rather than buy more American drivel so they are entitled to run adverts for it.

You're right you can't tackle real issues through caricature and fiction , oh wait a minute thats the basis of comedy, so i guess you can.

Anyway I concede that not everyone is going to like it but i think they won't like it because of the subject matter not the quality of execution. You have to admit that it is a quality production even if you hate the content. I think more programs should aim as high as the producers of Skins did.

Skins is commercial, running lots of 'commercials' for it was aiming to make it commercial. I don't know what you mean by "more American drivel", are you trying to say that Americans can't make good comedy or drama, because if thats what you mean I think you're not looking properly.

Also I'm not saying you cant tackle real issues and have caricatures and fiction obviously you can, but in the way you argued it was that Its serious and they are tackling real issues, but then you seemed to contradict it with You dont have to take it serious its just fiction and caricatured...

The cool one, the geeky one, the ditsy one...the shows just one big cliche.

I did end up fancying some of them. They're probably all 30 anyway, if Dawson's Creek is anything to go by.

Let me get this straight, I love American shows, some of my best friends are American shows. (You trying to send my to Guantanimo Bay Martin?). But all the good American shows are driven by one or two writers e.g. West Wing Aaron Sorkin, Seinfield Larry David, Curb Larry David, Sarah Silverman Programme Sarah Silverman, The Wire David Simon, The Sopranos David Chase etc.. Shows written by focus groups or writing groups are universally bollocks.

'Also I'm not saying you cant tackle real issues and have caricatures and fiction obviously you can.' Exactly thats satire, just look at Bremner Bird and Fortune, The Daily Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, they take serious topics make you laugh and make you think. Thats what Skins does, it is a satire of teenage life. When i said you don't have to take it seriously i meant that it is not trying to be realistic like a drama would, so don't take everything at face value, try to look for the meaning behind the caricatures.

Thinking about it if you've only seen the first episode then i think i can understand your view. The second episode 'Cassie' is when the series really got going.

Right no one answered my (Am i a perv )question, so i take it that its alright. Well Zoo you kind of did..Is their a disgusting borderline pervy age. Like say, they have to atleast be walking?
Sick

(jesting)

Charley, you are most definitely a perv.

But it's not like that particularly sets you apart from anyone else around here, so don't worry.

im sorry folks but speaking as a teenager i really dont like skins. there is a hollyoaks essence in there somewhere (yeek) and it seems to have the notion that if you are a teenager you must be either drinking, taking drugs or having a eating disorder...it's really strange, i actually know teenagers that DONT have these issues! oh and what was with the build up advertsing towards it? was it the game "how much fake sick can we spew around in a minute?"
and it can't be based on teenagers of today, where are the chavs and emos of the our youth generation?
*phew* rant is over...sorry guys, just a touchy subject

and they are not trying to be satire! they think that this is how teenagers are? urgh...argghhhhh.....y'know im gonna go make some food now before i explode >_<

and why is it under comedy??

Is under comedy because its funny.

I'm not going to be an apologist for this show because opinions on it are very subjective, its stupid to argue for or against it. I enjoyed it and I understand why other people may not enjoy it.

The last scene was really good in the last episode, imagine Final Destination crossed with a Cat Stevens musical, and you may get an idea of what it was like.

Heres a link [don't watch if, you want to watch the series as it will spoil it, or have a weak heart or if you don't like swear words]

Most of them shows you'll find aren't just written by one person, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld both started writing Seinfeld together for the first couple of seasons, and then later on got loads of different writers in Larry Charles, Tom Gammill, Max Pross, Peter Mehlman, Carol Leifer, Jeff Schaffer plus loads loads more. The Sarah Silverman Programme is written by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab aswell as Silverman. And stuff like The Wire and The Sopranos have loads of writers. And Fraiser had a huge writing team and that is one of the all time classics.

And I agree with Kitty, theres no way that Skins is trying to be a satire of any kind, its just some adults thinking they know what teenage life is like.

And whats with that ending, turned into some cheap indie rock video lol.

Tut, i said driven Martin, driven! Not written. Bloody hell how did we get onto this subject. Yes they are written by a bunch of writers but the idea and more importantly the execution and control of the idea is in a small number of peoples' hands. It means that when someone suggests something like, lets make Chandler's catchphrase 'could it/you/i be...' someone else will say why? instead of yeah that'll sell some t-shirts. Look at the first episode of Extras for Christ sakes and then tell me comercialism is good.

My point is this, do you think Larry David worries about demographics? They are driven by creativity not profit margins. And don't get me started on Fraiser, have you seen the one where Fraiser puts his foot in it and gets dumped while Niles is trying to get into Daphne's pants? Wait a minute thats every episode. Its suppose to be a show for smart people but how stupid do you have to be to not realise they just repeat the same story line every episode, oh look dad ditches some new expensive piece of technology in favour of something simple from ye olden days, classic.

I am gonna pull up a chair, and watch the row unfold. I lurrrrrrrrrrve it coz it isnt me for a change. Wahoooooooooooooooo!!.My one small request is, that if it turns to fighting, can you both be naked. Fankoo. Especialy as seeing the lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvely Aaron has given his permision for me to be a perv.Angelic

Exact same thing can be said for Skins, of course its aiming for a demographic, its trying to pull a specific audience and its highly commercialised.

Fraiser is smart because the characters have lots too them and the dialouge is extremely witty, the same thing cant be said for Skins. Skins is hardly original is it...the geeky guy is a virgin, a girl is anorexic cos she doesnt like a Mum and Dad having sex all the time, its ridiculous, lots of drugs, lots of drink and lots of sex with hardly any consequences...yeah thats really a satire.

Ur turn Ajp... This is better than my recording of Everybody Loves Raymond. I am holding my breath. God i am a nosey Biatch. Martin are you in your undies yet? If not me thinx its that time. Wahooooooooooooooo

I'm in a Sumo style nappie pant thing. :P

That is an image I really did NOT want.
