I never quite bought that....Gervais has said a few times how The Office was his first show and likes to play on the idea he was an unknown and yet still got it made. In reality I bet the issue of him being in it and them directing it wasn't quite the sticking point he suggests. Don't forget he was already doing the rounds of the 100 best shows, etc at that time. Golden Years, 11 oclock, Meet Ricky, etc had all been seen and Ali G was becoming a monster hit so I expect the idea of having the guy that took Ali's slot at the 11 oclock show in his own show was quite appealing to the right people.
