Is it a 'cracking' read? Ha Ha Ha! :$ No.

You're a light weight. You're fired. It's Excellent stuff that. Took a couple of reads to sink in though.

I really hate when scientists dismiss a planet as being incapable of supporting life because of extreme temperatures, or a lack of water or something. I mean, seriously, what the f**k? The whole point of the possibility of 'aliens' is that we don't know who or what they are. Who are we to say that they need oxygen, water, anything like that? Seriously. F**k right off.

Great point!
I think science is often far more arrogant than any religion.

I'm sorry Mr. Roscoff, I'm afraid...I'm afriad it's Chapman's disease.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

GALILEO:
So in conclusion your Grace, I have to support the Heliocentric model of the universe as proposed by my colleague COPERNICUS, as supported by his careful scientific observations.

THE HOLY FATHER:
Heresy! This is against the established doctrine of the Church. You are hereby under house arrest for the remainder of your life.

... and he was.... if he'd not been a distinguished person of power, they'd have pulled his legs off on the rack, or maybe even put him in the comfy chair.

In summary, I cannot believe you seriously conclude that Science is more arrogant than religion???

I don't think science is more arrogant. I think they are pretty equal!

Me toooooooooo! I HATE that!
Most scientific fact seems to be based on guesswork and assumations (that can't be a word...)

I understand that's the way it has to be, but it's bloody annoying to a non scientist.

As foreigns, they probably deserved it.

Besides, you can't judge anything against the actions of the Catholic church. The single most evil organisation in history.

Thank youuuuuu!! :D

That was bothering me.

Physics and cosmology blow my mind, I love learning about them. I don't know about your personal belief system, but for me it was delving into physics, especially quantum - looking at the very small systems, and cosmology - looking at the very large, that drew me towards the notion of design, as opposed to some obsurdly large set of coincidences.

Yes, the mind-over-matter idea of the quantum world made me stop and think too. If a man's mind can influence matter (even in such a small way) then the boundary between observer and participator no longer exists. In accepted science, our mind is shown to have the ability to mould our universe to our own expectations, so it really throws up the question of how can we really trust our senses when our senses can warp reality. Do we all live in the universe we desire? And even science has to acknowledge the Goldilocks effect of everything being just right. Nothing is easy. If a scientist or religionist says otherwise then they're decieving themslves as much as their audience.

Quote: Moonstone @ December 15 2008, 8:25 PM GMT

And I've always thought about how arrogant science is to presume we are able to see everything that is here. We don't even see objects or the world around us directly - it's just a second-hand interpretation constructed inside our brains. How do we know what's really there?

Utterly true. We often forget our senses pass through a filter called 'personal bias' - we see what we want to see and disregard at a subconscious level those things that we don't. It's second nature to us. Much like Orwell's idea of DoubleThink, all the niggles are glossed over before they trouble us. Personally, I like disturbing thoughts. But not in a Lovecraftian sense. ;)

Except not many people get beheaded live on the internet in the name of Boyle's Law.

Shock horror! I agree with you there.

To me it seems ridiculous to say that there is no other 'life' out there in the hugeness.

A lot of scientists agree that there could be life out there. I don't know many who would catergorically rule out the possibility.

Oh come on..... we all know there is life out there. Ask Alf about it. Oh and those aliens that beamed me up were a fun lot.
