Just finished watching this and, I don't know about anyone else, but I found it quite inspiring - especially Russel T Davies.
The quote about 'on-the-nose' dialogue - "I'd rather be confused for ten minutes than bored for five seconds" - brilliant.
Anyone else catch it?
Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe - Writers' special
Missed it. And iPlayer takes it's time to have stuff up.

Yeah, It wasn't exactly trailed very well - it was pure luck I saw it at all.

Yes, I think he said that was a Jimmy McGovern quote. A good one.
And being told to go and f**king write at the end was good too. I need someone to tell me that every day please.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! I can't beleive I missed this!
Thank the lord for BBC iPlayer. Thanks for the reminder.
RTD is one man I would like to be stuck in a lift with... for about a week.

I've planned two days of non-stop writing starting at 7am tomorrow and I really could have done with seeing it. Now I'll end up eating into my dedicated writing time because I want to watch the programme. Cant win.

I would do, but you keep declining my offers to come to your house.

It's on the front page of this very site, yet I still didn't take it in!!
"I'd rather be confused for ten minutes than bored for five seconds"
Yes, quite. Not intentional comedy, granted, but anyone else tried reading the script for Survivors on Writers Room and contemplated chopping off their own head with a hacksaw?
LOL. Great episode.
It was good hear that experienced and established, successful writers have the same problems and fears as me. Also that there is truly no one way to write.
This should be a must-see for new writers. Well done, Charlie, for getting a full 50 minutes to interview them on telly.
A major point is that they all agreed, whatever their style, that writing convincing dialogue is the hardest thing to do - possibly a 'can do, can't do' thing.
I caught this by chance but well worth it. Served as a good kick up the arse hearing that the proffesionals struggle sometimes too. And good to know dialogue is key as I'm really crap at everything else.
It was a very good show.
Does anyone know what Russell T Davies was referring to when he said the opening line was "Happy wedding day sis" (or something?)
I totally agree with the point of the avoiding exposition, yet I know many readers (in production offices, writersroom etc) would give bad feedback on "10 minutes of confusion".
Just watched it on iPlayer. Great to hear we're all the same on some level, whatever our experience. Makes you feel like part of an exclusive club.
Had to laugh when Tony Jordan said he types with one finger. People take the piss out of me because I only use my index fingers to type - I swear I can type as fast as the next person though.
"Writing is like having a poo." My new mantra!
Watched half last night, I'll peek at the rest later, but it was certainly an interesting watch.
I thought it was brilliant especially Linehan saying, "Writing is like taking a poo. Sometimes you're not ready but you know you have to go sometime."

I dont think it was meant literally.....5 secs of boredom probably wont be a deal breaker either!
