I think it's cos it's such a short quote, 'They're here' must have been said in a billion films.

'We're gonna need a bigger boat', is much more obvious.

They're here in google gives you Poltergeist as the first hit....good enough for google, good enough for me !

Yeah, I did that too.

hmmmm...better remove my references to Tripods and Manimal then :D

Laughing out loud God no! I'm all for putting in the references, they can just be a little riskier.

Yes, but you can't expecxt your audience to sit there googling every one of your jokes.

My point was that if it's number 1 on google it must be pretty well known!

And there's nothing wrong with making people google.....when Gervais wrote "whoooo, slow down you move too fast. Solomon's here" in reaction to the stappler he must have known it would miss 99% of viewers.

A lot of people will get this joke, I think, especially when performed right. And if some don't, it's one line, who cares?

That's my theory....someone misses it, it's just a flat joke....someone get's it...they think you wrote it just for them.

Thanks for the input everyone.

It's like Del Boy's malapropisms and inaccurate French; I bet at least a quarter of the audience don't even know what's going on there but they still laugh.

I got the quote. That said, I'm over 30 and I think it was touted as a possible title for a paranormal sketch show I was working on.

One thing you should never do (IMO) is flag up your reference...you wreck it for those who felt "special" because they got it and you dont help those who missed it anyway. Just watched Step Brothers (Will Ferrell movie) where a character forced to visit a shrink describes himself as a caretaker at a college who can do sums the students cant" .... all very funny until the shrink asks "is this Good Will Hunting" for the benefit of those who have never seen the film and so won't get it anyway.

I'm not and I got it. I'm still in my twenties. you hear that Bussell? Still in my twenties. Boy does it feel sweet!

Did I make that suggestion? I had a physical resemblance to the Poltergeist girl when I was a child and was made to say "they're here" a lot. That's why I wasn't sure if anyone else remembered it as well.

I just about remember.

That would make quite a funny and poignant sketch: parents obsessed with Poltergeist force child to reenact scenes from movie.

If I remember right it was actually one of Lee's. Hence it was never used.
