British Comedy Guide

The Funniest Country In The UK?

I'm only half serious in asking this, because many of the best comedies have been produced by a combination of actors and writers from different parts of the UK. For example, Alan Patridge is the product of two Englishmen (Steve Coogan, Patrick Marber), a Scvotsman (Armando Ianuci) and a Welshman (Peter Baynham). However, does anybody think one country is inherently funnier than another? If pushed, I would say England is head and shoulders above everybody else in the union. In fact, it's barely even a contest.

And as for Northern Ireland? I can't think of a single funny person from there other than the Reverand Ian Paisley and those guys that go marching in bowler hats every now and then.

Frank Carson?

The Welsh do pretty good for comedians, as you said Peter Baynam, then there's Rob Brydon, Tommy Cooper, Keith Allen, Griff Ryhs Jones.

Sorry guys, better defend the scotsmen.

Billy Connolly, Chic Murray, Ronnie Corbett, Rory Bremner, Rikki Fulton, John Sessions, the Krankies and many many more.

Maybe being from England doesn't help your P.O.V. Ever thought you just haven't been exposed to most of the comedy from other countries?

I see more stand-ups come from Ireland then anywhere else. And TV Shows from the writers of Father Ted seem to have a big influence on things.

Oh yeah I forgot to answer the question. I'd say England as well, but it's a purely biased decision.

This is a very interesting question actually. I would say England. Not necessarily because England is inherently any more talented or 'funny' that Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland (although that may be the case; I'm not sure), but purely on the fact that with a much greater population there's a hell of a lot more coming out of England which can be considered.

I well always be thankful to Scotland for “Still Game”

I also remember a comedy from Northern Ireland which was shown late Saturday nights on BBC2 a few years backs, can’t think what it was called, does anyone else remember.

But England win due to the sheer numbers produced, more precisely Manchester seems to be a hot bed of comedy talent.

i think that england has it because of the amount it produces and the fact that the companies making it are bigger, so they are picked up by foreign countries., The north is probably the comedy capital of britain though, with all the manchester, bolton, newcastle comedy that is produced (although three names from bolton stick out and all three are crap, peter kay, paddy mcguiness and dave spikey).

So which British country is the funniest? Theres only onbe way to find out . . . FIGHT!!!

Haha, someone had to say it!

Are you talking about the funniest scenery, landmarks or rivers? I think the lochs in Scotland are hilarious.

You can take the pish out of our lochs, but just you wait until the next hosepipe ban down south. Then you'll be sorry

If we took the "pish" out of your lochs then Nessie would suffocate.

Hosepipe bans never bothered me.

Me neither, I don't own a hosepipe.

Scotland. Their sayings are hilarious.
"I will hang yer face off yer"
"I'll Scalp yer"
"Dunny Ken"
On and on. My ex Hubs was a Scotsman, and it was impossible to have a row with him without pissing myself with laughter. It used to annoy the hell out of him. Sometimes I would cause rows on purpose just for the entertainment value.
I once fell out with his mother and that truly was one of the funniest moments in my life to date. I swear i only made out a quarter of what she was bleating but it was so funny. They are FaNtAbUlOuS.

Wave :S
