In what way is he a brilliant character?

Not being a writer, I wouldn't know where to begin in critiquing a character.

you do roll around on the floor chuckling your arse off at Two Pints, MF, Everybody Hates Raymond.....

No I don't. :)

n.b. Aaron has a black cat?

Yes...?

Quote: Baumski @ June 30 2008, 4:00 PM BST

Well, and in consideration of Aaron having a cat for sexual gritiforaction, there goes your proof. But as for the point of view that dictates that 'Love Thy Neighbour' is one of the most racist programmes ever aired (and I suppose 'The Black and White Minstrel Show' would also be included), then 'The Goon Show' or 'Monty Python' would also have to be included on account of the ethnic mix of stereotypical characters.

It was cringeworthy, lazy and not at all clever. Up there with Two Pints.

Two Pints=knob, cock, orgasms, knob,cock,orgasms
Love They Neighbor=coon,honky,nign-og,coon,honky,nig-nog.

Oh the hilarity!

That said my older cousins were grateful to see a black person on't telly in the 70s!

Anyway I preferred In Sickness with Alf Garnet.

Yes, hilarity indeed.

Both charcters were ignorant and racist, the women weren't, and that's what made it such a sharp piece of writing. On the other hand, would you say that Nina Baden Semper's character was purer because she was black?

I'm not sure you understand why I don't like the programme. I am fine with taking the piss out of cultures and people's ignorance and I laugh out louder than most people if it's cleverly written. In my opinion it was lazy and gratuitous, that's why I likened it to Two Pints. It wasn't sharp or clever. It just had the kudos of stating the obvious and going where other sitcoms of the time daren't go.

Chris Rock I find very funny: "There are two types of Black People; Black people and niggers".

Ouch! Still funny though. And no, it's not all the more purer because he's black.

It's always a hard one, I mean these shows were made in a dark, ignorant time. The 70s.

I've always felt very queezy about the blacking up in UK comedies at the time.

And all to often, it's people who were trying to do the right thing, who got it wrong.

On the Buses, Terry and June sinister WASP only shows one and all.

It's the old thing for me I want to keep The Merchant of Venice, for Shylock's humanity, even if I have to wince through the antisemitism.

n.b. that Chris Rock routine is ace.

WASP?

White Anglo Saxon Protestant

RACIST!!! :P

Made in a differently illuminated environment....

better?

White Anglo Saxon Protestant

Aha, ok. Well the very last thing I would have described Terry and June as would be 'sinister', but I've not seen it all so will take your word for it.

Oh looky, such a pretty post count. 25352.

I dunno watching a world on TV, in which you never appear?

As part of a greater whole. And they were sinister, no kids, worked in a job with just him and his boss, the only people they ever saw were travelling Swedish business men?

He was an international assassin, luring his prey to his home. Like Peter Cooke in Mr Jolly Lives Next Door (June obviosly seducing them first with her homely ways). They let that filth on the TV?

Good God, you really are a communist.

No I just distrust Terry and June.

In the same way, how did 2 guys who were quite clearly sex offenders get a job working on buses?

I'm more of a socialist, a national socialist.

Love Thy Neighbour got away with getting big laughs from 'racist humour' by saying it's okay they call us names as well. That is not balance, it is just a trick.
