Sadly screenwriters don't have the same profile in movies as directors.

The only 'name' screenwriter I can think of who I would go and see anything they write is Charlie Kaufman.

Some of my favourite directors also write, or have a big hand, in the writing of their films. Such as P.T. Anderson, Welles, Kevin Smith, Coppola, Tarantino, Chris Nolan. Of course Kaufman has also taken to directing his own scripts now, partly I suspect because once a writer gives their script up to a director, they might find their work bent and twisted out of all recognition by a director wanting to force their own vision on it and make it their own. The director, in films, is king.

Marcello Mastroianni

De Niro and Pacino's earlier career (Mean Streets, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon..Etc)

Woody Allen

Michael Caine

Marlon Brando

James Dean

Lee Marvin, Lee Van Cleef (I like their faces more than anything else)

I like seeing David Niven pop up in stuff too.

Robert De Niro.
