If someone doesnt like him now they never will....the man's on a popularity slide. He will get richer, he will get more people see his work....but he'll never be more liked. I doubt he cares (or says he cares) but it's an interesting corner he's boxed himself into and one that he's had to make smaller and smaller to maintain.
Expect to hear the "I plan to retire soon" and "I'll only work behind the camera from now on" and "I've achieved all I want so what do i care" comments over the coming years.....he'll be a rich recluse in the LA hills by the time he's 50......because anything else would mean breaking character by slowing or reversing the ever increasing detachment and arrogance.
I don't agree.
Remember it's only comedy snob types who are partaking in this (rather predictable) mini backlash. Not the general public.
What's a comedy snob? An AWFUL lot of bloggers are picking up on the "hecklers were twats but Gervais had it coming" aspect.
Alright then, internet forum snobs. Take your pick.
It really doesn't represent the general public, however much we'd like to think we're normal.
Anyway, not a big deal but I think this does flag post the end of UK TV comedy's love affair with RG...I just watched the re-run and even Angus had a dig before the first guest came out!

Trust me....he won't win new fans by getting heckled by his fellow comedians....and he WILL lose old ones fed up of sticking up for him when he trots out the same old character.
I thought this year's ceremony was a bit, I dunno... something wasn't quite there like it normally is.
Angus did an alright job of presenting... but the show really did need Ross presenting it IMHO. Ross would have done a much better job of interviewing those who were on stage to present the awards and, dare I say it, he'd have delivered some of the opening gags better (I did like the bubble burst pop at Gavin and Stacey)
Bit annoyed that Michael McIntyre didn't win the award he so deserved, but good to see The Inbetweeners and Sharon Horgan get some recognition.
Kevin Bishop was a bit naughty, but I don't blame him. His antics will get his name in the press tomorrow, more than some of the winners will get (his name certainly got mentioned a few times on the low-budget ITV2 show). Bad publicity certainly hasn't done anything to hurt the careers of people like Russell Brand.
One final thing to say, Iain Morris should be signed up to our cricket team after that impressive catch!

Very impressive prediction skills there Ian. Well done!

Thanks Mark. By the way, I didn't know you played cricket.

Oh dear-not the bloggers-NOT THE BLOGGERS-! Whatever shall he do?! The truth is a lot of people have always hated him, for whatever reason. The only reason Gervais 'had it coming' is because he's been around a while now and has been successful, so he becomes a target.
Quote: Pete @ December 8 2008, 12:18 AM GMTbut it's an interesting corner he's boxed himself into and one that he's had to make smaller and smaller to maintain.
What corner is this? The ability to write, direct and star in any tv show he thinks of, films of his own and other peoples, and delivering stand up shows that sell out not just in this country, but America as well?! That's a pretty good looking corner!
I think he will just give it up at some point though, simply because he'll have done everything he wants to.
I thought it was funny when a previous poster in this thread said Gervais wouldn't be a true comedy great, I think The Office has assured him of cult status forever more.
I'm a massive fan of Gervais but have to admit his acceptance speech was what we had all seen a few times before, but that's him, so you can't really argue. At first I thought to myself 'well he's nominated, he could have shown up' but when you actually see the show and see what twats some of the people are i.e. Kevin Bishop and the complete waste of time that was the After Party, you can begin to understand why he didn't show up.
What I liked is as soon as you saw Gervais in bed with BAFTAs and Globes behind him people immediately started kicking off, if he watched the show he probably loved it because it got exactly the reaction he was looking for. I also loved it when he whipped out the DVD, that really seemed to get up people's noses. A successful night in all for Gervais, wins the award, plus pisses off lots of comedians who can only dream of being where he is.
Quote: Seefacts @ December 7 2008, 12:15 AM GMTCorden is your typical ugly fat bloke.
Loud, over-delivers really lame-arse whimsy and never shuts up. His 8 Out Of 10 Cats performance was f**king bizarre. He was like 12 year old.
I bet he can't believe his luck he's famous. You just know everytime he's seen out with Lily Allen (yeah, like she's EVER going to want to f**k you) he thinks 'Yeah, f**k you school rugby players who made my life HELL!!!'
He was probably in his school rugby team, being built the way he is.
