I read the news today oh boy! Page 949

It's unusual for them not to be able to trace a call, I'm presuming it must have been made on a mobile so obviously makes it harder but not impossible.
Really sad, fingers crossed it all turns out ok.

17 year old lad arrested for abusing Tom Daley - on Twitter before you all get excited.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-19059127

I must say, our Twitter police are top notch - yeah there's drug gangs, murders, rapes, etc. going on in the rest of the country, but when it comes to nicking people for being 'a bit of a dick', we are like Elliot Ness.

Rule Britannia, etc.

I think a night in the cells and a telling off from a scary policeman would do the twat a lot of good. (I followed the whole thing last night as it happened.)
Doubt that's quite what's happened as this isn't the 1950s. But still.

Is this not the very definition of the Thought Police? Yes, it would be great if people didn't go on Twitter and personally abuse people to their virtual faces, but considering our own newspapers are able to get away with it all the time, it seems a bit petty and a waste of police time.

Considering the way Daley has been hyped and the fact he still hasn't won anything, I'm not surprised there is a backlash.

The person involved should have had their account terminated by Twitter straight away. He shouldn't have been arrested.

This wasn't a backlash, this was a dick saying horrible things about a teenagers recently dead Dad.

Thing I find truly depressing is the guys got 36.000 followers, post mocking Tom's bereavment 54,000. And his writing could be pretty accurately described as sub moronic.

Is this the kinda guy who gets followers?

No because Twitter isn't thinking, it's writing.

Correction, this was a dick saying horrible things about a famous teenagers recently dead Dad.

If you have a severely disabled daughter and you are under attack by a gang of yobs on your street and are bullied so much that you commit suicide, then the police can do nothing about it - but write something mean about a famous person on Twitter and they'll come busting down your door within seconds.

I'm sure there is a moral in there somewhere, but I've yet to find it.

Or singing. Yep, everyone will be banging on about the rights of Pussy Riot to desecrate a church with terrible punk songs about Putin, but writing something about Tom Daley on Twitter will not be tolerated.

Anyone know a Stacey in Leeds? Hope they find them.

Maybe the little girl should have posted it on Twitter.

I don't care about the Police overreaction, obviously that was a bit much, I care about the act itself. Which is vile, whether the person is famous or not; he should have been kicked off Twitter straight away.

Apparently he was arrested for threatening his life. Of course the reaction to celeb abuse is insane.

This guy is a right f**king hideous racism scumbag though. He needs a kick in the cock.

It's the weird media thing that if you commit a crime with multitudes of witnesses it must at least be looked into.

A very modern conundrum.

Like when thingy off The Weakest Link said she wanted to put the Welsh in Room 101.

And was investigated by the police for being a racialist.

Ridiculous case. But when there's 3 million witnesses the police at least have to pretend to be interested.

He has made lots of violent threats against people on Twitter, if you look at his history.

Those statistics pale in comparison to the Sun, Daily Mail, Guardian, etc., all repeatedly taken to court for libel far more shocking then whatever some idiot wrote on Twitter.

Difference being, they were taken to court in civil actions, the police never arrested them.

Talk about double standards.

Oh he seems an odious fellow.

Funny thing is banning him off twitter would probably hurt him more than a short jail sentence.
