In my teens, I foolishly went with a friend to an all black neighbourhood in Washington DC so he could buy some pot. Let me tell you, it was probably one of the most frightening experiences of my life - Hackney, Brixton, New Cross, etc. are Disneyland in comparison.

Do we know why the Police accepted the killer's claim that it was self-defence? Where there witnesses to say the kid attacked him, or did they just trust the word of a mental, gun-toting racist the homeowner ?

A few points I'd like to make:
I doubt it's an all-white community. I live in an upscale gated community and several of the neighbors on my street are African - American: a retired Air Force pilot, a stock broker and a pharmacist and there are more Mexicans than you can shake a stick at.
Gated communities have prominent signage at every entrance that warns about trespassing, soliciting, security patrols, etc.
It sounds like the two were scuffling when the young man was shot. If the shooter feared for his life at any time during the struggle -- and that includes the young man reaching in his waistband -- then the shooting was justified.
The kid should have just told the guy that he was just passing through, raised his arms and waited until the cops arrived.

I'd stop shaking a stick at Mexicans you're liable to get shot.
I've gotta be honest in the UK we seem at times to live in a fantasy land visa vi violent crime. We've created a situation where from a games point of view; the odds are so ridiculously stacked in favour of the violent criminal. That we are incredibly vulnerable.
The puny sentences handed out to drunken thugs who beat people up, kill them, or cripple them on the streets of the uk are terrifying.
In this case the kid was warned, warned again and f**ked up. The cost was his life, tough luck kid.
And as DaButt pointed out he was either casing the community for later theft or to stupid to realise he gave the impression he was.
Either way no great loss.
Is anyone surprised that the suspect who murdered the soldiers, the rabbi and the Jewish kids in France is a Muslim al Qaeda wannabe with time in Pakistan and Afghanistan under his belt? For days all we heard about is neo-Nazis who targeted Jews and black people but it was obvious to me that a jihadi was behind the killings.
