God knows. I don't smack a cat even if it scratches the shit out of me and has its teeth sunk deep into my arm, so I can't think of anything a kid could do to make me smack it.

As far as legislation goes though, I have no idea. I can see both sides. Kind of.

Dunno why not, the big cats (Lions, Tigers etc) and possibly domestic cats too, smack their kittens when the kittens are naughty.

Violence tends to teach very little that's positive or worthwhile.

I dunno, it we didn't beat little Umbogo with hammers, then that devil would have stayed in his body forever.

I suppose Soul Train never made it across the Atlantic? Don Cornelius (that dude could wear the SHIT out of a suit) killed himself recently. Soul Train was a major influence on the African-American music scene and introduced white Americans to a lot of music that they might not have heard otherwise. I guess it all seems silly now that white kids are all gangsta and shit these days ...

I've heard of Soul Train but I don't know if it was ever shown here.

Is it the show that features in Hairspray?

Not a news article as such but opinion piece on how people can be very nasty on internet.

Jings, it's a rum do if some company was stupid enough to pay that kid for writing such a load of twosh.

I don't think so but I don't remember much of the movie.

Soul Train was brilliant!

The beginning of this video is a pastiche of the show, just to 'give y'all some flava'

Hmm. I am in many minds about this. If anyone is prepared to share views on smacking kids/legislating I'd be very interested!

I don't know if he has any statistical proof but his anecdotal evidence seems to be that parents believe it is the state's fault that their children go out and riot because of doo-gooding laws and nothing to do with them.

I doubt if it is a very relevant factor either way but for an ambitious politician like David Lammy, it gives him a few consequence-free 'voice of common sense' brownie points.

I don't think you can equate rioting with failure to smack children. There have been plenty of riots throughout history when smacking was common.

A new television advertising campaign in England is warning against the temptations of "just one more" drink.

AFAIK, the current research shows that any amount of alcohol is a health hazard, and all those stories in the past about how a certain amount is good for the heart or whatever, always ignore the fact that whatever small benefit thus gained is far outweighed by a host of other dangers. So it's interesting that there's not even a suggestion in this ad campaign that abstinence might be the best idea; instead we're told to "use smaller glasses". I wonder if this approach will be tried to other drugs? Should smack addicts use smaller syringes, or coke fiends try smaller denomination notes?

;) I've just had the one 'extra' and blimey Icannot function, I can't remember if I had that one extra?

Why don't they supply a glass with the bottle then us morons will know how to keep exact measures? they don't want us to give up, it will cost far too much in revenues.

Why is alcohol so cheap in the house of commons?

- The supposed cardiovascular benefits of a low level of alcohol intake in some middle-aged men cannot be taken as proof that alcohol is beneficial. To do that one would need a randomised trial where part of this group drink no alcohol, others drink in small amounts and others more heavily. Until this experiment has been done we don't have proof that alcohol has health benefits. A recent example of where an epidemiological association was found not to be true when tested properly was hormone replacement therapy. Population observations suggested that HRT was beneficial for post-menopausal women, but when controlled trials were conducted it was found to cause more harm than good.
