Thinking about it logically, why is it always 'women and children first'? If you want to organise an orderly evacuation with the minimum of fuss and bother, then surely men are the best option?
Women and children are slow, panic easily and make lots of noise, plus men can always re-marry and sire more children. Watch any nature programme, when danger is near, they always sacrifice the weak to protect the herd.
