I read the news today oh boy! Page 530

Not as bad as the woman who served 16 months because of a fibbing informant.

It's the problem with the police arresting to create headlines.

much easier and safer than arresting real crims

He became a "real crim" the moment he decided to murder people. Perhaps the cops should have waited for him to become a "real-er crim" by not arresting him until after he'd killed a few hundred people with a bomb?

Or perhaps they should have arrested him when he first made enquiries about terrorism. Tried him and locked him up as a wannabe terrorist for a year or so.

Rather than wasting thousands of dollars and hours of resources to turn him into a publicity icon.

We all know how the court system works. If the only evidence they had was an e-mail or two then his lawyers would have argued that he was merely a confused teenager and he would have walked away and continued his quest for jihad.

The sting operation proved that he was sincere in his desire to murder hundreds of innocent people; he was given many opportunities to back out of the plot but refused to do so.

He's a scumbag Islamist terrorist and he's off the streets for a long time. That's good enough for me.

You certainly don't know how the courts work.

With the UK riots some guys posting silly arsed things on the internet got much longer sentences than people actually looting and scrapping.

Not to mention the Australian guy who got a long sentnce for posessing pictures of Bart f**king Milhouse.

But back to your corrupt incompetent intelligence agencies. I may dig up the link on the FBI agent provocateur who was reported to the police by the mosque he was trying to radicalise,

But back to your corrupt incompetent intelligence agencies.

A man who wanted to detonate a van full of explosives in a crowd of holiday revelers was arrested and nobody was hurt. I'll take that kind of incompetence any day.

A stupid impressionable kid who could probably have been deprogrammed during a shortish stay in prison. Is now a poster boy for Al Quaeda and a symbol of US perfidy.

Countries with real terrorist problems rarely have the time for these selfish games.

I think you'll find that "deprogramming" a person so committed to a cause that he/she is willing to commit suicide and/or kill hundreds of people isn't easily done, especially when you're talking about religion-based causes. I doubt it would be legal for the prison to interfere with this man's religious beliefs in any way whatsoever.

As for "poster boy" status, I doubt that 99% of Americans outside of Portland even remember this case, much less his face or name. Another in a long line of nearly anonymous, violent extremists who are rotting in prisons or graves because of their misguided views of their religions. And that's just fine with me.

Portland isn't where you need to worry about...

Al Quaeda and Hezbollah have their own TV channels and these stories are their Breaking Bad.

And Saudi Arabaia has had damn near 100% deprogaming Al Quaeda members. Seriously dude. Turns out magic markers, hugs and a good cry work. It was that or lock up a quater of their population.

Most people call "bullshit" on Saudi claims. Their program is short and relies on cash payouts, new cars and reduced sentences to "deprogram" the radicals. Somehow I think the UK and US could empty their prisons and "cure" the most violent and hardened criminals if they offered to let them out of jail and drive away in a new car with $50,000 in the glove compartment. But would they really be cured?

Al Qaeda is still a major threat in/to Saudi Arabia and I don't believe for a minute that they've made any significant progress in solving their problem. Hell, Saudi citizens are still the biggest financial backers of Al Qaeda.
