That's really your argument? What next, the fact he had a British flag on stage once and got called racist for it; then two years later everyone was adorning their dress or guitar with the same flag and no one said a thing?

Everyone who hasn't studied his music do make assumptions like this, in fact his music slates straight white middle-class men.
I remember another piece of 'evidence' was that for a while he flirted with skin head imagery. No one seemed to spot the most obvious link, the homo-erotic nature of the images and the suedehead look.
