Poll finds Canada disenchanted with royals: report
Not that this means anything to any of you but I thought some of you might find it interesting. If anything I expect I'll just get some jokes about Canada and a "you're nothing without us" speech from Aaron. ;)

- The CBC reported that the poll conducted by the Navigator polling firm found some 80 percent of Canadians believe that the monarchy is out of step with the times, although they feel that the royal family has had an important place in their nation's history.

- More than 60 percent of respondents feel as well that Canada's constitutional monarchy is outdated, the CBC reported.

This was done by the CBC but in league with the "Canadian friends of the Royal Family".

well no wonder the figures are so clearly in favour of the monarchy. what a load of rubbish; anyone 'pro-monarchy' is an absolute splashback.

I don't blame Canadians being confused, living in a country with both active British and French ties. It must do your head in. Console

Yea I guess you're right. Although the French seem to be more keen on keeping their ties and the most ardent supporters of Commonwealth connections are actually our Military.

Then I'm proud to be a 'splashback'. :)

Oh dear.

Lighten up a little! Blimey.

"Man tries to smuggle 14 pythons into Norway by taping them to his body"

"Customs officers quickly realised the man was smuggling animals, because his whole body was in constant motion," Mr Breilid told VG.

When the man dropped his pants, the officers found 10 cans taped to his legs, each containing a lizard, he said.

Unlikely to go anywhere as-is being reported, but a good indicator of the Government's priorities and where they want things to go. Take note, guys.

It won't solve the problem. But there is a problem of perception that anything that can be digitalised is fair game to steal. Most people wouldn't feel morally OK about going into their local supermarket and stealing a packet of sausages and a bottle of gin, yet to steal products via the internet is deemed OK.

When it comes to arts and media, what is the point of people spending long hours and big amounts of money producing content only for people to feel that it's fair game to steal it? This is a real problem. People who write or create for a living surely deserve to be able to reap the rewards for their work. If you can't own the rights to your own work, then frankly what's the point?

The whole issue is perceived too often as an "us and them" issue, i.e. the poor internet user versus the government and the multi-nationals, when in truth internet piracy affects the prospects of even the lowliest musician or writer, because less profits from successful stuff means less money to develop new talent. And real people's real jobs are dependent on earning money from content, it is not a "victimless crime". The idea that everything on the internet should be free is not only idealistic, it is unfair and counter-productive. Illegal file sharers should ask themselves how morally acceptable are their actions.

Rant over. :)

Well this is a great shock. Unimpressed

Actually lots of ISPs are already doing in. I've had 2 warnings already which is why I'm so paranoid about getting caught. Trouble is, I don't think this new thing will allow you to just use another provider.

The Golden Age of the internet is going, not only with the downloads thing, but also censorship is starting to happen, the only place in the world for true freedom of expression and they're going to take that away for certain. *sighs*

I bet you never taped songs off the radio, Tim? Or borrowed a book from the library? There have always been ways, the net hasn't changed that much really.

I would love it if I could buy food and alcohol at the supermarket and then copy them for my needy friends. I can't steal products via the internet as I'm not into credit card fraud and outback Australia is dinosaursville when it comes to unlimited monthly broadband quotas required for torrenting.

Er, no, actually.

How is legally borrowing a book from a library equivalent to stealing it?

What about taping CDs from the library?

I've never borrowed CDs from a library.

The defence seems to be that there's "good" stealing and "bad" stealing. Fair enough, if that makes people feel better about what they're doing...

Yea Australia has just about everything backwards when it comes to the net. It's too bad because it will hold back the country in the future.
Canada's current problem is the monopoly over internet in this country. The lack of diversity in choice has led to stagnation by the big 4. Which is really only two big countrywide depending on your province.
The West = Bell/ Shaw
Ontario = Bell/ Rogers
Quebec = Bell/ Quebecor

So really we only have two choices. Canada recently got nailed by a major study that showed how badly we've started to fall behind. We also have a gigantic country to service but that's another story.
