I read the news today oh boy! Page 2,708

If only France, Spain, Portugal, Rome, Holland even got as much stick as Britain does for its colonial past, eh. Any country that was advanced enough to grab lands did so and yet you'd think we were the only ones, the way some lefties bang on about it.

I'm British, in Britain, so I'm discussing Britain

Many European countries have absolutely shameful histories of spreading out over the globe bringing with them death and disease and genocide and suffering to people who didn't deserve it

The other day I saw a documentary about Belgium's conduct in the Congo - absolutely f**king disgusting and abhorrent - they essentially murdered half the population

If it's being 'a lefty' to point that out then so be it

Maybe you aren't bothered about the human suffering our nation has dished out - which is typical it seems of a 'righty'

Exactly. They were all at it.

So it's alright.

In the context of world history and how mankind has striven to get where we are today, then yes, I'd say it is. To condemn our past on the basis of today's cossetted life most of us have is plain nuts, especially when we wouldn't have it if it weren't for our past conquests. And the majority of immigrants who condemn us tend to forget they wouldn't be living here now if we hadn't.

I wonder why some are obsessed with the past deeds of countries, especially Britain.
Since man picked up a rock and threw it at another there has been murder and conquests.
Apes in the jungle still band together to kill other bands of apes for more land. (ring any bells?)

So I can only conclude it's moral superiority again.
'I condemn it and you don't, therefor.....

To be honest I thought that the Elgin Marbles were little round balls that we robbed off some Greek kids back in the day,

I've always loved those films.

..

It cuts both ways, some are obsessed with past successes of Britain and never stop harking back to an age that's gone. If people are proud to be British, they should tell us what they love about the country now.

There's a new Apes film next year. I'm looking forward to it.

I think tying yourself in knots about past behaviour of nations is sort of pointless.
We can't possibly take that guilt on.
Nor should we puff our chests out at past heroics that we can personally lay no claim to.
But acknowledging the facts and, wherever possible, re-dressing wrongs, seems to be the right thing to do.

Lots of bad things in our history. Slavery. Religious persecution. Concentration camps in the Boer War. The Amritsar Massacre. Enoch Powell. The Daily Express etc.
Lots of great things too. Shakespeare. Dickens. Darwin. Our vast contribution to science, culture, democracy and sport. The NHS, BBC, welfare state. The Beano and Blackadder.
I am not ashamed or proud to be British. It's random where I was born. I had no control over any of those things.
But some of these please me and some don't.

I'm surprised that thieving sod at the British museum hasn't tried to sell them on Ebay

No.
They'll wait till there's 80% off Seller's Fees.

I'm holding out for the Elgin conkers and the Elgin catapult 🤪

Brutal pmq's for sunak today

Starmer: "I met with the Greek PM, we talked about the economy, security, immigration. I also told him we won't be changing the law regarding the marbles. It's really not that difficult." 🥊

That's diplomacy

Instead of petulance

After we were all forced to stay at home by Boris, apparently we were all being lazy

"Referring to Johnson, it added: "He says he wants everyone back at work 'we can't have the bollocks of consulting with employees and trade unions. They need to come back to work. All the malingering workshy people.'"

This, from a man who has never remotely done an actual hard days graft in his f**king life

The fat over privileged c*nt 'resigned' as PM then went on three foreign holidays on full pay

Oh well, at least they replaced him with a billionaire...
