"A total of 7,549 newborns were given 12 variations of the Islamic prophet Mohammed's name last year,"

So they choose to lump all 12 variations together, but not do the same for British names like Jim, Jimmy, James, Jamey, Jimi etc.

I see your point, but it's not the same thing really, is it. Jimmy isn't a variant spelling. If you're named Jim, that doesn't make your name James.

I'm sure the same can be said for all the 12 variations of Mohammed, whatever they are.
Does anyone know?

Mohammed 2,833

Muhammad 1,422

Mohammad 920

Muhammed 358

Mohamed 354

Mohamad 29

Mahammed 18

Mohammod 13

Mahamed 12

Muhammod 9

Muhamad 7

Mohmmed 6

Mohamud 5

Mohammud 5

That doesn't add up to 7,549. Not even close.

I am confooooosed now!

Maybe they added in 1,558 Mikes by accident.

Me toooooooooooooo!

Anyway, the important question is, what number is Laura at?

No, but I got that from http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article1890354.ece

...which is from 2007. All I wanted to offer were spelling. I left the numbers in 'cos I'm lazy. Personally, I believe I'm lazy because of all them immigrants, coming over here, giving their kids a popular name. Wouldn't be like that in my day. We had to have unpopular names, like Ebenezer or Winterbotham. It never done me no harm.

69 ?

*faints from the rudeness*

(Quite like the name Ebenezer.)

These are the numbers. Most of the Mohammed variants aren't even in the top 100.

Wow, Laura has finally become an unusual name.

But seriously, there have been more babies named 'Skye' than named Laura this year? Doesn't seem very believable.
But then the 'most popular baby names' lists never are.

So it's those Olivias we've got to watch out for then?

I knew a really weird, circular-faced Olivia when I was young, so I'd never use that name!

An olive with a none olive shaped face?

All the other olives would rend her limb from limb like hate maddened chimpanzees.

Those bloody olives with their anger issues.
