So a US reporter goes out onto a beach with a spade to dig below the surface because of reports of BP oil. He's allowed to do that, right? He's a free American, right? Wrong. He almost gets arrested.

I really don't care enough to watch that video, particularly at work, but perhaps he wasn't allowed to dig precisely because there may be oil under there that is presently being contained...?
Threatening him with arrest is certainly heavy-handed on the part of the authorities though.
I assume it's simply a case of the authorities trying to keep people from interfering with the cleanup work, but BP and the Obama administration have plenty of reasons to sweep the oil under the rug ...

The BP oil disaster happened because there's not enough regulation in the oil industry. As with Wall Street, we let the f**kers do what they want, we suffer when they f**k up, and then we have to bail them out.
Having been a supplier to the Oil Industry I would say there is actually quite a bit of regulation.

It's not effective regulation, though. If it was, the BP disaster wouldn't have happened. Ditto for the financial crisis. Better regulation would have stopped it.
