I always find it hysterically funny when zooo says something like 'up your arse', because I always imagine her as being very refined and polite.

The purposes for which said info is recorded, used and disseminated, however, should be subject to pertinent and stringent restrictions.

I agree with the harassment angle, but not wishing to teach my Grandmother to suck eggs, a private individual cannot 'press charges' in a criminal action. That's for the DPP to decide.

One needs to use civil law to 'press charges', i.e. take a person to court in a civil action.

It's similar to the 'Trespassers will be prosecuted' threat: there is no law against trespass, although many believe that it is illegal.

'Criminal Trespass', where one damages property whilst in the act of trespass, for example, is another matter.

If you really want me to go into it, I shall. It is pretty boring though.

You can only have "charges" in a criminal context. In a civil context you "bring an action" (or a law suit). "Pressing charges" would be inaccurate terminology in civil law.

"Pressing charges" in criminal law is a colloquial term for describing a potential witness' receptivity to a)giving a witness statement and b)attending court. When a crime is reported, a complainant will be asked if they wish to "press charges", by which it is meant "do you wish to give a statement in order for this matter to be investigated fully".

A decision on prosecution is then made by the Crown Prosecution Service. However in cases of harassment, where there is a willing complainant, there is usually found to be an overwhelming public interest in pursuing the prosecution, firstly to discourage such behaviour and secondly to indemnify the CPS against later allegations of negligence should the harassment escalate to a more serious offence.

Actually, it is arguable that trespassing now does constitute a criminal offence.

How is this even news?

Well there you go - you learn a new thing every day. :)

I am sorry you have had to report 25/30 crimes though. That is very much more than the average person. :(

Knock yourself out.

This makes me really uncomfortable. Going to Dignitas because you are "disillusioned with modern society"? It is so sad that she felt her only option was "adapt or die".

Very odd. No one expects you to be on Twitter, love, you're 89.

I'm sure that can't really have been the main reason. I hope.

She's 89 and had enough seems fair enough.

The reality of euthanasia will never be someone choosing to die at the very most aposite time.

God knows we're all living too long, with too little pension, so give it a generation and it'll be the decent thing to do.

I know - that makes me sad and scared. Life is a gift. Will our grandkids be pressuring us to book the next flight to Switzerland?

As in something giving freely that we didn't ask for.
The same can be said of pigeon poop.
Generosity and selflesness is a gift to, but one we can choose to give.
Otherwise we get tied up in that awful measuring life only in terms of it's length.

'The pensioner said she had suffered from ill-health in recent years and was worried that a further deterioration might result in her going into a nursing home.'

She also said that she never owned a telly, so obviously a nutter.

well quite, good old reliable none sensational Mail reporting

Honestly, I think this woman wanted to snuff it on her own terms before she was pronounced an official dementia case and kept alive against her will.

Yeah, I guess. I am pretty libertarian when it comes to social issues - but euthanasia always has and always will make me uncomfortable.

I worry that it is a slippery slope. Where do we draw the line?

one of the harsher things about euthenasia in the UK is you need to get to anothr country not always easy or cheap when you're very ill.

Thus forcing Brits to make the choice earlier.

Another case of our hand wringing, touchy feeling legislation, causing death and suffering.

The one thing pro-euthanasia legislation will definitely cause is death.. ;)

Maybe you don't.

Maybe corner shops should sell cyanide pills alongside the ciggies and beer.

Same result just quicker.

I've known enough people hanging on to life who didn't choose to.
