The BNP showed up with a fake gallows and shouts of 'hang them!'. The family complained of having to go through the ordeal, his widow is worried that her son will have to see constant images of how his father died, the murderers fought with the security guards in court. One of the killers was given a 'whole life' sentence which breaches human rights under EU law.

I was castigated for suggesting a more dignified, less public trial. My views haven't changed.

Yes because a rushed trial out of the public eye would have stopped all the protests and provided closure.

It's absolutely wouldn't have allowed the government to bring even more dodgy sub judice cases.

Joanna Dennehy, female serial killer has been jailed for life. She was having an affair with one of her victims before stabbing him to death.

So remember lads, next time you're out on the town looking for love, you might want to avoid psychotic drug addicts with tattoos on their faces. I know that ugly women in track suits are considered the epitome of British beauty but please think twice before staying the night at her junkie filled bedsit.

I hope the psychiatric team that were supporting her answer some tough questions.

Not everyone is suitable for community trearment

It's certainly an interesting debate - can all acts of violence be explained away as 'mental problems'?

Is there such a thing as 'evil' or is it just a number on a scale of sanity?

Should we do away with prisons altogether and just have psychiatric hospitals pumping criminals with endless amounts of brain altering drugs?

Certainly when someone is arrested for killing or raping a child, there are no calls for psychiatric counselling, just the hangman's noose or castration.

Do we get to pick and choose our victimised murderers?

Elderly and disabled passengers could lose vital bus services because of cuts in government funding, councils in England warn.

The Local Government Association (LGA) says support for the concessionary fares scheme has been reduced by over a third since 2010.

Under the scheme, councils have to provide free off-peak travel for those aged over 62 or disabled.

The government says it provides funding to meet subsidised travel costs.

Local authorities say the funding from central government for concessionary fares has been cut by £261m since the coalition came to power.

Now councils say they are forced to subsidise the scheme, often by cutting back on other local transport services.

It is a particular problem for county councils trying to provide relatively expensive rural bus routes and school transport.

Used my bus pass only today to 'pop into town for a few things . . '

F**k the carrot crunchers.

F**k the carrot crunchers.

I take issue with this sentence.

'F**k the crunchers with a carrot.' Better?

Get back to Olive.

What do you reckon on Ukraine? The latest of 342934729342 allegedly inevitable catastrophes that suddenly just disappears, or is there something more worrying about this particular situation?

Chamberlain them the Crimea as a freebie, and then hope Putin doesn't Hitler the rest of the Ukraine/Belarus.

When Russia recently invaded Georgia - the breakaway republic not the US state - there was no WW3. We didn't act then, why would we act now?

Because I'm a lazy bastard, I'm reposting my latest Facebook rant on here -

Jonathan Ross has had to step down as host of the Hugos - a science fiction awards ceremony - after rabid nerds protested on Twitter. Wow, two stories on Internet bullies in one day, nice work keyboard warriors. Here is the low down, the main bods in charge of the Hugos wanted someone high profile with a link to science fiction, comic books, fantasy and movies and chose Ross. However, the other committee members weren't consulted, among them a feminist...dum, dum, dah!

Farah Mendlesohn warned that if Ross hosted the event, a writer called Seanan McGuire would refuse to appear because she was frightened he'd make a fat joke. Mendlesohn promptly resigned after her warnings were ignored, probably because the people who run the Hugos prefer money and publicity to right on politics and vegetarian lasagne. But here's where it gets really interesting, a hoard of feminist sci-fi fans ran to Twitter to complain, fearful that JR would call them lardies, make them cry and that they wouldn't feel 'safe'.

Some complained that it was damaging diversity, having a successful, white, male media personality as host - I'm sure they would have said exactly the same thing if Benedict Cumberbatch agreed to head proceedings - whereas others have branded him the epitome of 'lad culture' and misogyny. But more importantly, the geeks didn't want their tiny little insular shut-in world encroached by journalists - real ones, not bloggers - by having such a mainstream host.

The irony is that out of fear of receiving negative publicity, the Hugo committee members have shot themselves in their lefty feet by showing just how closed minded and intolerant they are to anyone who doesn't fit their 'diplomatically sensitive' presenter profile. One woman refused to appear out of an unfounded fear of being unfairly criticised, a man will now not appear after being actually unfairly criticised.

Come to the Hugos, meet Seanan McGuire (who?) and have a miserable time with a load of moany PC bigots who can't take a joke. Set phasers to: F**k You.

That aside, what exactly is the link between Jonathan Ross and sci-fi?

His wife directed a comedy super-hero film, the super-hero genre sometimes gets filed under sci-fi for some reason... that's all I've got.

EDIT: Oh, he's started writing sci-fi comic books.

She didn't direct that film, she wrote it, plus several other films. As you say, he's written stuff, plus is a huge fan. Also, he's handing out awards, he's a famous presenter with experience, seems like a pretty good fit.

Caitlin Moran, a rather famous feminist, tweeted this link, due to her agreeing with it.
