Quote: Lazzard @ February 9 2013, 9:13 AM GMTIn my opinion Banksy is only famous because people in the 'art world' are so afraid of being called old-fashioned and reactionary they give him far too much credit.
I think it might have more to do with the 'art world' being able to make money out of him.

There's a lot more to Brazil than a few spiders. People should really get over arachnophobia. Most of the guys on big webs are pretty harmless. Walk through a crop of sunflowers or a row of grapevines at the right times of year and you'll be covered in webs and spiders. They mean no harm. It's European wasps that you have to avoid upsetting.

Arachnophobia isn't something you can just 'get over'. I know the spider on the ceiling can't hurt me, I know I could easily kill it, but the bit of my brain responsible for keeping me away from things that can kill me thinks that that spider is a threat and makes me act accordingly. It's genetic lag from when my ancestors lived in environments where small crawly things could be a major threat. I can't get over it any more than people can get over the panic when they go bungee jumping, or the jolt of adrenaline when someone says 'boo' unexpectedly. It's in my DNA.
Harumph.
You don't 'get over' phobias I'm afraid!
Oh, what she said.
You can get over phobias though.
Just pull yourself together!

"But like I say, non-arachnophobes don't understand. Too lacking in imagination and/or basic human empathy to comprehend the instinctive primal reaction spiders provoke in genuine sufferers, they blather idiotic platitudes like "It's more scared of you than you are of it", which is absurd since a) spiders aren't gripped with hypnotic dread at the sight of people and b) the spider's primitive brain doesn't have any concept of fear, in much the same way it doesn't have any concept of what the Police Academy movies are."

Pretty broad statement!

Nobody is saying the fear isn't real... But it's neither instinctive nor primal. Most phobias are learned behaviour. They are irrational. Fear of spiders is not the same as fear from jumping off a bridge tied to an elastic. Falling IS an instinctive fear.
If arachnids were more scared of me than I am of them, THEY WOULDN'T KEEP COMING IN MY FUCKING HOUSE.

Either way, suggesting casually that someone 'get over' a phobia is a pretty dumb thing to do.

PRECISELY!
I'd like to look up studies on arachnophobia but they all have massive pictures of spiders in them. WE ALL KNOW WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE!
Lol, exactly. Very helpful.

It wasn't me that did that tough was it?... But you 'casually' quoted my post.
