The Daily Mirror's War On Swearing Page 3

I would say the f word is worse than bastard.

Really? I'd be equally horrified to hear my 6 year old saying either. And this is where the argument gets silly. Working out which swear words are permissable and which aren't.

I agree.

Though I dare say the current panic will blow over.

I do hope so. But the BBC especially seem to have been well spooked over all this.

Yes, we're getting into Mediawatch territory, where you have people watching tv all night and making a list of what words they heard, and how many times!

I have to say, when watching something, when I hear the f word it just makes me think the programme is less adult than a programme which doesn't have it.

If you look at the very severe column, it drops away quite a bit after f**k.

So "twat" is beneath "bollocks"? That's insane! (And physically impossible!)

Name names. Tell me shows that go out now, or have gone out recently, that could be under threat?

Yes, of course I'll name names. Rolling eyes

This particular show is one in development that's fairly racy and everyone involved is having an "Oh shit" moment.

'Jew' doesn't seem like a swear word to me. A lot of people seemed to mark that out as a 'very severe' insult. Hm.

I'm not interested in some show in development, I was more interested in shows that have been transmitted and you feel may fall foul of some moral panic. Because personally I don't see it.

And for me, if we did have a spot of moral panic that killed shows like Coming of Age and their ilk, it would be well worth it.

I'd love to see Dr Who the f**k are looking c**ting Dalek?

How many words did you fail to type here, sooty?

Can we win a prize if we guess correctly?

I have an issue with F**k and Bugger. F**k comes in at 3 while Bugger is at 21. F**k describes general penetrative sex but Bugger is very specific in the area of ring piece and bum fun. Why is it that swear words are not necessarily ranked according to the perviness of the act they allude to. If this was the case, then Dog Tosser (one of my favourites) would surely be up there with the top contenders such as Wanker and Arse Rimmer.

It's like somebody writing to the ITC and saying "I'm writing to complain about a programme that featured shocking nudity that I saw last night, whilst perusing the "Red Hot Pussy Club" channel."

The Post Office have a time travel service now? :O

Laughing out loud

Yes ... But then they're 6.

Depends which way you take her.

I think you'd find quite a high proprtion of more popular shows killed than just Coming Of Age.

Ok.

But is 'bugger' not a word which has, generally, lost much of its original meaning, to become just-another-swear-word?

Ok.

Thank you.
