So Why Do You Want To Do It? Page 2

It is all the fault of Mr. Heath, who at the age of eleven told me I could write. Ever since then, even when I have not been writing, which has normally been the case, I have felt it is what I should be doing.

I do (unfortunately?) have an unhealthy disdain of marketing men in the music and entertainment business.

I share the disdain. My first novel was about a mismanaged marketing campaign for a band that didn't exist. It ends in a Welsh cultural revolution and the CIA conspiring to assassinate the said non-existing band at their first gig.

Writing is one of the things i've been consistently good at, I love telling stories. I also want to make my mark with writing.

I want the stories I have in my head to be able to entertain people.

I want to do to other people what the best books/scripts I've read before have done to me.
It's an ego/narcissistic thing. I want people to love me, and giggle when they remember my fabulous bon mots, and cry forlornly looking out of a window at the rain thinking about what I've written.
:)

Zooo, excellent summary and images. I'd aspire to inspiring that in another human one day.

I look out the window and cry anyway. It'd be nice to have a real reason to do it.

Haha!

Sorry for sounding flippant, I'm currently writing gags for a mobile phone company. Where as the money isn't as good it ain't bad.

I was more interested in the practicalities how many cards a month? Is it a one off payment or are there royalties?

And more realising you never really get paid to do what you want, only a simulacrum of it.

I get a basic monthly advance on ideas sold, plus obviously more if and when I pay off the advance. I also get an annual performance bonus which I never see because it goes straight on the tax bill.

They used to do royalties but not any more, which is a shame because I'd probably be a millionaire by now if they did. That's not an exaggeration. Rolling eyes

As will I. :)

I guess for me it was always wanting to do something different.

When I was younger I used to draw single cartoons n' such likes, the ones you see dotted around in national newspapers and a couple of bits for the grown up comics like Spit & Zit.

That fizzled out, as I lost interest.

Years passed by, then got into trance and dance music and thought, hey why not, so started to learn the software and over time brought some hardware. Produced some nice tunes, one of which got signed to a new label as their launch track, it got to No 8 on Dave Pearce chart, also played out by himself on Radio 1 Dance Anthems.

But as ever with me, lost interest and moved on.

As time passed I couldn't help but think I want something more than the average job.

One day at work whilst filming with my camera phone a couple of mates acting out daft scene's (which I would then edit on my phone for our/my amusement) I simply thought, why not. At first thought of just writing/filming some scene's to put up on youtube but Royal Mail are clamping down on what's allowed to be shown on the web, some have even been sacked because of it. So this was out the question.

So then thought why not have a go at writing a sitcom/comedy drama for TV based on/around my place of work, which is what I'm currently doing.

After this has been sent off, (and during the months of waiting for rejection) I'm intending on moving onto something else I promised myself I'd do this year but haven't, which is writing and illustrating a children's book.

I guess I like the idea of getting paid for something I actually enjoy doing, ‘cos then it's no longer work!

:)

That sounds terrifying, if you hit writers block do they send the bailiffs round to reposess your talent?

1) My girlfriend needs an operation.
2) I have no marketable skills other than writing.
3) ????
4) Profit.

1 Was Morrissey's excuse, is she still in a coma?
