Gervais - at it again Page 9
Out of interest, where does the money come from?
I assume his Office/Extras work is the bulk of it? (maybe not?) Is that DVD sales? Does he get a bigger chuck because he's the star or the writter or both...hows that all work? Cause he's not built a £3.5m pool on the back of corporate speaking!
DVD Sales, Books, Acting, Directing, Writing, Producing, Presenting, I bet he was already pretty well of being in the music industry.
Quote: Godot Taxis @ February 13, 2008, 12:28 PMYou forgot to post the bit where he tells the interviewer that his indoor swimming pool cost £3.5 million and not the £2.5 million reported in the papers. Why would you say that?
The point of that joke (he uses it in his stand-up to good effect) is that most celebrities are embarrassed that the value of their houses are revealed in the papers because they don't want everyone knowing how much they earn. But he twists it by saying he's actually embarrassed that it wasn't enough. A classic lead you one way, surprise ending joke and well received at his stand-up.
Its not for me to explain all his jokes. You just get it or find it funny, leave it at that.

It will be royalties and syndication of the format across the world. The original episodes of the Office, I'll be surprised if he got more than £5k for each of them - split with SM. That was the going rate back then and it came out as tentative sitcom.
£5k!
Crikey.... so unless someone wants to show your stuff all over the world, wheres the money for a writer, even a successful one? Or...isn't there much?
Expect to make 40k as the writer of a sitcom. 3k per episode plus repeat fee - which is the same again first time. Gervais also directed and he would have probably been paid in the region of 10k per episode for extras. The rest is from DVD sales and syndication - as containsnuts says. (In the RT interview Rick says he didn't need to work after the success of the American office).
interesting - so not that well paid unless you get lucky and the yanks buy it!
Quote: David Chapman @ February 13, 2008, 12:18 PMThe Office was very good.
I got that quote from Jake.
Quote: Godot Taxis @ February 13, 2008, 12:14 PMWhy would anyone pretend to be arrogant for comic effect.
Because it's funny. Oh, wait...
Quote: David Chapman @ February 13, 2008, 12:31 PMOH FFS - LET IT REST!
Bitterness is not a nice trait.
Neither is impatience.

Dont really know how to answer that! I would say the joke was in the things he says and how he says them. Hes playing up for comic effect; I can understand anyone not finding it funny, but still cant believe anyone believes he isnt at least trying to be funny rather than him just being a twat! Anyway, I think thats enough from me on this subject, some people think hes a c**t, some dont, there we go.

129 posts later, you could of just said that are the start!
"I'm hoping Ricky Gervais will hire me for his future comedy brainstorming sessions. He'd better. I'm losing the gift of irony."
