Gordon, just checked out your profile. Lovely detailed geekarific list there. Just curious to know though, how well Only Fools translates to you over there. What is it you like about it?

First of all I like David Jason's comedy/acting style. I think the show wouldn't have worked that well without his charisma and the way he delivers a line. (most of the cast is ace btw). John Sullivan's writing can be very spotty a times...but Jason makes even the lame jokes work.

Then it took me several episodes to understand the dialect (they don't exactly speak Oxford English)...that was a bit hard for me as a non British. But the higher level of concentration (I did get a few jokes only after repeated viewings) made me appreciate the "lingo" and the whole setting of the show.

I like the fact that the Trotters (and their friends) are working class losers who don't let their fate grind them down. Especially Del always puts a brave face on and tries to make the best of it. It's the comedy that derives from that desperate situation that makes me laugh. The constant trying and not being discouraged even by the most humiliating mishaps.

And then there are certain aspects of Sullivan's humour that I do like. Del's misunderstandings or how he misquotes sayings or names. I don't know why...but this is "right oop me alley".

I hope this clumsy reply gives you an idea why I like OFAH.
By the way, OFAH is completely unknown here in the German speaking world. I heard about it via that 2004 BBC sitcom poll. I already knew Jason then from my Open All Hours DVDs which I bought because I liked Porridge (which I fell in love with watching it on BBC1 or 2 during the early 00s)

Oh yes, being drunk or stoned...those were the days.

Shouldn't it be a bottle of "Gordon's Gin" that you're clutching?

And then there's the fact that Basle and Peckham are pretty much interchangeable
of course. :P

I am now going to quote some poetry because I always do when newted, so here goes....

Fear not the waking world, my mortal,
Fear not the flat, synthetic blood,
Nor the heart in the ribbing metal.
Fear not the tread, the seeded milling,
The trigger and scythe, the bridal blade,
Nor the flint in the lover's mauling.

Me too.

My musings on the news that JLS had split up . .

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message JLS Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

They were my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Ok very drunk now so just one more for all the lonely souls out there....

A bit of Jobsworth for you, I will apologise in the morning :$

Strange fits of passion have I known:
And I will dare to tell,
But in the lover's ear alone,
What once to me befell.

When she I loved looked every day
Fresh as a rose in June,
I to her cottage bent my way,
Beneath an evening-moon.

Upon the moon I fixed my eye,
All over the wide lea;
With quickening pace my horse drew nigh
Those paths so dear to me.

And now we reached the orchard-plot;
And, as we climbed the hill,
The sinking moon to Lucy's cot
Came near, and nearer still.

In one of those sweet dreams I slept,
Kind Nature's gentlest boon!
And all the while my eye I kept
On the descending moon.

You Sir are a genius and I think I love you Lovey You and me against the world mate...

Ben better go to sleep. He's got to get some rest in for drinking and curry in Cambridge tomorrow.

Sorry about all the poetry. I think I have a poetry problem I may consult Poetry Anonymous.

Two term papers to do...still suffering from writer's block.

Go and sit down, close your eyes and listen to some music for an hour, always works for me.

Just looked up the temperature in London. Even I think that is pleasant, heading toward warm.
