Carrion Crow

The Carrion Crow was one of the many species originally described by Linnaeus in his 18th century work Systema Naturae and it still bears its original name of Corvus corone. The binomial name is derived from the Latin Corvus, "Raven" and Greek corone/"crow".

As well as the subspecies of the Hooded Crow being split off as a separate species, there is some discussion whether the Eastern Carrion Crow (c. orientalis) is distinct enough to warrant specific status; the two taxa are well separated, and it has been proposed they could have evolved independently in the wetter, maritime regions at the opposite ends of the Eurasian landmass.
Well it's one of my favourites.
What's your favourite crow?

Russell.

Russell.

But he can't fly...no wonder with that beergut.

Love it!

The Jackdaw!

Magpies are my favourite crow. "One for sorrow!" I think when I see one. Then quickly look for another - "Two for joy!" - to reverse the curse.

What do you get for 17?

I saw a magpie murdering a sparrow the other day. Standing on it and pecking it to a messy, bloody, feather scattering death.
One magpie is enough for me.

Good job you don't get to see what your pussy gets up to when it gets hungry.

:O

Usually the cat just kills it and wanders off, no blood. I know some cats create right gore-fests though.

I'm haven't got a favourite type of crow (it's a rook!!!), but my all time ever favourite latin name for a bird is that of the tibetan blackbird. Having said that, I'm about ready for a Tibetan Blackbird right now.

You lot don't half crow

What's the one with a dusky grey hood and blue eyes? Is that rook? Anyway, magnificent bird, as all the crows are. Yes I've seen magpies being beastly to smaller birds but they really are a stunningly elegant looking bird.

I could only find it up to thirteen:

One for Sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
Eight for a wish
Nine for a kiss
Ten a surprise you should be careful not to miss
Eleven for health
Twelve for wealth
Thirteen beware it's the devil himself.

Hey, I just *discovered* some more. ;)

Fourteen for hunger
Fifteen for thunder
Sixteen for scandal
Seventeen for a candle
Eighteen for beaver
Nineteen for fever
Twenty beware a cleaver.

:D

I had to get a dead crow out of a hole in the wall at home last weekend.

Before you ask that chat up line has only worked once.

Anyway I was dreading it, it was horrible, but luckily it's insides had already been eaten out by flies if the weight was anything to go by.
