Gervais - at it again Page 4

Since when did people get so offended when someone has a bit of banter, tongue-in-cheek, light-hearted joke at things. I say loads of stuff I don't really believe, but its just banter. And if you can't see that...dear god, help you because you need to get more of a social life.

Don't make it personal, man.

There are things you do and don't say in the industry. Otherwise every interview would consist of everyone slagging everyone else. Delboy Gervais is the only established mainstream figure I can think of who regularly reminds people of how many awards he has and how much better America is.

That's not his style, why does he have to be a puppet? It was a joke in-line with his persona. I'm surprised its got you so wound up

That's everyone's style at award ceremonies - you take the opportunity to do a back slapping.

I don't remember anyone on here complaining about Chris Morris's character on The I.T. Crowd being similar to his newsreader character from On the Hour/The Day Today/Brass Eye. Then again, I suppose he can be forgiven, because it was Graham Lineham who came up with the I.T. Crowd character, and asked him to play him.

There's a difference between playing a bit part in someone else's show and consistently playing the same person, on and off screen, for the best part of a decade.

Thanks, you have just all proved me so right it f**kin HURTS!

(I'm laughing AT you by the way.)

He also said he couldn't wait to get home and see his cat. So Aaron, you should be ashamed of yourself. :( He's one of us.

Oh. Yes. Erm... Well he's not ALL bad.

... Miaow.

Hee. string feelings.

What a ropey joke.

So isn't it good to have something different? Isn't it boring when everyone is exactly the same saying exactly the same things? So what if he does it everytime? No-one else does, so that makes him different and that makes him funny.

And of course its an act, the same as Merchant acts as though hes pissed off Gervais gets all the praise and attention. It's all just silly silliness.

It's just his sense of humour.

But frankly, I couldn't give two hoots if he was an absolute arsehole because he produces stuff I consider to be top-notch comedy. I highly doubt if I will ever have to make the decision whether or not to be Ricky's friend so it's all irrelevant to me.

Sorted :(

I am working on a keyboard that is probably older than Ellie (which is f**king old).

Right, Ellie dear!

I really hope that that was just badly phrased.

So everyone has to be a robot churning out the same cliches? Yeah, that's entertainment.

I dunno, he's being lambasted for being unoriginal and original by different people.

I'm waiting for the 'its ok to hate him cos he's rich' argument and then we can all go home.

Exactly, people here love to judge these people yet don't know if their favourite icons are arseholes or not. Its just pointless.

For me, the point is this. The Office was fantastic. Gervais was fantastic in it. Extras was great too. Again, Gervais was fab. His podcasts are some of the funniest audio stuff I've ever heard. He's done absolute wonders for the British comedy industry and all credit to him for that. But it just annoys me when he goes on and on about all his awards and stuff. Am I jealous of him? Course I am! His acheivements are amazing. But there's nothing wrong with a bit of modesty. Even false modesty would do.

When I die, I might find that there actually is a God, and actually get to talk to the Big Guy. But imagine the disappointment if the conversation went like this:

ME:
Wow, so, you're God.

GOD:
Yep.

ME:
Wow. So...you created everything? The world, the universe...everything?

GOD:
Yeah. Great aren't I? I sometimes can't believe how great I am.

ME:
Hold on...isn't Pride a sin?

GOD:
Yeah, but I wrote the commandments so they don't apply to me. They couldn't, could they? I'm God. Christianity is the world's biggest religion. 2.1 billion members. You can't argue with those sorts of viewing figures. World's best-selling book? The Bible. Makes Harry Potter look like the Sinclair C5 Owner's Manual. I'm allowed a little earned-arrogance aren't I?

ME:
I...can't tell whether you're joking or not.

GOD SHRUGS AND WINKS.

That's right - chuck your dummy out of your pram!

I am a fan of Ricky & of Steven Merchant.
I think we would all be fools to say that one is greater than the other. Poor Steven Merchant rarely gets a mention & I would'nt be surprised if he was the one who wrote most of the really funny lines.
They are both incredibly talented. Yes Ricky's acting is pretty much one way. That one way works very well though. I can't see him ever doing a dramatic role but I would love to be proved wrong.
The Office & Extras are 2 of the very best comedies to have hit our screen in a very long time. The podcasts are fantastic too.
I dont care if Ricky goes on about America. Fine mate. Live there. Live there & do your parts in big American films.
After a while he will either get sucked in & become all Americanised & thus die or he will be right back here. Here is what made him. The Americans love his British quirks. He will not last out there if he loses that.
Anyhoo I am a big fan. A big fan of them both.

I can't believe people still fall hook-line-and-sinker for these interviews. What next Sacha Baron Cohen is really from Kazakhstan?

No, and that's because it's only Borat and not Sasha Baron Cohen or even a mix between the two, a bit like Barry Humphrey's who doesn't live Edna 24/7.

You make total sense until this bit. I just cannot believe that everyone can't tell when he's joking and when he's being genuine. It's so obvious to me.

I suppose it's just because I've watched more interviews/shows/etc cos I'm a bit of a (massive) fan. that's all I can put it down to.

Zoo, there is no difference between 'pretending' to boast and actually boasting.

I disagree.
:)

Well, explain the difference then.
