Gervais - at it again Page 3

I don't get this one trick pony stuff. He's co-written two hugely successful world-wide sitcoms about completely different subjects and characters (brent = entertainer in the workplace, Millman internal conflict between purist and money), he's broken records for his Podcasts, he's had a best selling book about Flanimals, and has one of the best selling stand-up runs in the country. You might not like all of these things but that is more than one trick, in fact more than most other comedians/writers in a life-span.

Brent and Millman are essentially the same character. Andy's just a toned-down version with a bit of a heart. And they both rely on social awkwardness to create the humour. Extras is The Office with a smoother edge to it.

Podcasts, big deal. Is he not exactly the same on those as he is in the standup? And from what I remember, those aren't exactly uber different from the rest of his I-hate-anything-non-American arrogant wanker persona.

Aaron wasn't saying that his writing showed him up as a one trick pony, but the 'boastful knob' persona was tired - if indeed it is a persona.

Yeah, something like that. It wouldn't be so bad if that persona was particularly different to Brent.

I'm not sure you can say someone is a one-trick pony 'apart from his writing, performing, stand-up, drawings, podcasts.' Its like saying Hitler wasn't always nasty.

And I don't subscribe to this need to change a comedy persona if you had one. Plenty keep theirs for their whole careers and their are enough fans who like it to keep it the same.

If you don't like it, I don't think its up to him to change your mind.

:O I really can't believe you think that. But you clearly do and I've got an afternoon deadline so all I'll say is the type of humour is the same but there is a whole lot more to both sitcoms than just that.

I don't remember anyone on here complaining about Chris Morris's character on The I.T. Crowd being similar to his newsreader character from On the Hour/The Day Today/Brass Eye. Then again, I suppose he can be forgiven, because it was Graham Lineham who came up with the I.T. Crowd character, and asked him to play him.

Well, you know I don't have any difficulty saying that Gervais is funny or that he has made stuff that had quality. The problem is his relentless boasting - read my first post again. He couldn't say anything about the Baftas apart from that he had seven and they weren't as 'good' as oscars.

The coen brothers, tony hopkins, Harvey keitel, Ridley scott and countless others were at the ceremony last night. What's wrong with saying: 'I'd love to meet Joel coen - I loved Blood Simple', or something like that, instead of: 'I'd put xxx in my show...'

I'm not a flag waver, but Gervais's non-stop praising of the US over Britain is very wearing. It's not like we're short of talent in this country.

Thanks, you have just all proved me so right it f**kin HURTS!

That's not his style, why does he have to be a puppet? It was a joke in-line with his persona. I'm surprised its got you so wound up

Surely by praising the coen brothers and Blood Simple, like you wished he did is in direct conflict with your last point. He;s in a lose-lose position with you.

Since when did people get so offended when someone has a bit of banter, tongue-in-cheek, light-hearted joke at things. I say loads of stuff I don't really believe, but its just banter. And if you can't see that...dear god, help you because you need to get more of a social life.

Oh my god, you PEOPLE!

I don't know how you make it through a day withour getting offended by NOTHING.

I saw it, it was just a 30 second throwaway moment being interviewed by one of those bland T4 cocks. WHY on earth would you expect him to open up and be all matey with him? He was walking down the red carpet doing probably 30 interviews, being asked the exact same mindless questions. He just does the bare minimum to get it over and done with so he can get on with his day.

F**k's sake. :)

Yeah, but hating Gervais is fun and only likely to offend Gervais Fanatics who think he could take a dump on a plate the resulting turd was comic genius. Besides, Gervais does make it easy for us to hate him. He loads the gun and hands it to us with his endless repetition of the same material and jokes.

Well, well done for pissing me off. That makes you a swell person. :)

He also said he couldn't wait to get home and see his cat. So Aaron, you should be ashamed of yourself. :( He's one of us.
