Doctor Who... Page 982
I got the impression that John Hurt was the original Doctor and had had his identity stolen by Smith and his predecessors. Or something. F**k knows.
He made reference to the horrible but necessary things he'd done.
Ergo, Time War.
The hand-waving about whether he was "The Doctor" and whether Smith was the "eleventh" clearly point to Hurt being a Doctor we've never seen before.
We never did see the McGann/Eccleston handover. It would be just like Moffat to retcon a new Doc in.
I'm willing to take bets that I'm wrong.
We don't know who or what or why or other 'W' words Hurt's 'Doctor' is, because we weren't told, that will be in the 50th.

Though this seems likely. We'll see.

That's what I thought. Perhaps tangenitally inspired by Siegel and Shuster originally creating a story about a 'bad' Superman.
Rumors from weeks ago all pointed to hurt playing a doctor we never saw during the time war. And with the reveal tonight that rumor looks to be dead on.
I'm glad this series is over because it really was painful to watch at times. Not a story worth remembering. Moffat leaves so many loose ends and plot holes there's just to many to count up, its such lazy and poor writing.
He is obviously the ninth Doctor, whose time has been erased because he committed genocide against the daleks. This then makes Smith the twelfth Doctor, according to Time Lord lore his last incarnation, the thirteenth being The Valliard if I remember correctly.
So maybe the reason Ecclestone didn't want to be in it (and also why McGann thought he was in with a shot) is because their scenes would be essentially different ends of a regeneration?
Quote: Kevin Murphy @ May 18 2013, 8:55 PM BSTHe's a past Doctor, between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston, the one who blew up Gallifrey or whatever. He didn't go by the name "The Doctor", but it was the same bloke. That was my read, anyways.
There's been rumours floating round like this for a few weeks now. I think it's the most likely story behind Hurt's Doctor.
Ecclestone didn't want to be in it because he fell out with the whole Doctor Who team, he has hinted at this a bit recently. However with this storyline he is no less involved than Tennant would be, it would really mainly concern the eighth and ninth Doctors, although the ninth must regenerate into Ecclestone so he would have a place if you wanted to tell the whole story. It will be interesting to see how exactly Tennant is woven into the story.

But who would have erased his time? The high council of Gallifrey were also blown up.

Most of them, if not all, have moved on since his time.

Perhaps the White or Black Guardian did it.

He still thinks the whole production was run like a conveyor belt apparently and wants nothing to do with it.

The Doctor himself has been erasing his own traces throughout the last two series
Seeing the first Doc and Susan nicking their TARDIS was rather nice.
