'Ginger Johnson, Chalky White and me.'

'Kippers Hancock'

'How do you know they caled me Kippers?'

'With those feet what else could they call you?'

there wasn't a single woman in it despite it having a large cast and running for several years.

Actually there are quite a few women in series 4. Among them the actress who played the annoying woman with the lapdog in Fawlty's "The Kipper & The Corpse".

I like her in You Rang, M'Lord?.

Don Estelle (Gunner Sugden) is a horrible actor. But his appearances do work if they come in very small doses.
Oh, and he's got a wonderful voice.

R.I.P., Gunner Sugden.

Jus watched the episode where the concert party is playing a game of football against an Indian team. The L-shaped field was a great and funny idea.

She is Mavis Pugh. She was part of Arthur Brough's repertory theatre in Folkestone.

Personally I only truly started to enjoy it at series 5

Series 5 got sillier and a bit zanier

Made it more enjoyable

And more importantly, funnier

I think you're right. I expected a drop in quality after so many episodes and the loss of an important member (Bearer/Bates). But now I'm watching series six and I think I never laughed so much since I've started watching the show.

Ah I've got series six all ready to go!

Have you watched it now? If yes, did you like these episodes?

I have only watched the first 5. A big thumps up so far! Not as good as Dad's Army or 'Allo 'Allo!. But enjoyable to watch and you are always going to get some laughs from each episode. A good cast too. Any reason why Jimmy Perry liked war sitcoms?

Croft and Perry both went through WWII when they were young. I think it's natural to write something about your own experiences (maybe to exorcise your demons) when you're an artist...and then...Dad's Army worked with the audience, maybe they felt the time was right to build on that success and make another wartime comedy.

Only ep 1 so far

The one where the American film director turns up

Liked it!

'Gloria' has some hilarious over the top moments

I must have admit I had never watched this before but I found a video years ago, I watched it and thought it is bloody marvellous, and I have both records of Davies & Estelle's Whispering Grass. They should reshow this on GOLD or BBC Two in my opinion.
