I don't want to be a complete arsehole, but isn't this something for the "I read the news..."- or the "general general"-thread? I mean we can't take the piss out of David Smith, tell him to stop starting dispensable threads and encourage him with threads like that (even if it's a serious subject) at the same time.
I'm pretty sure I met the guy once, years ago.

I do agree. But it seemed a bit churlish to say it when the accident had just happened. But yes, news thread is preferable for stuff like this.
My dad's in the same business and knew him, apparently. When his name was read out on the radio news yesterday he was shocked.
