I could see it coming too - and James - I think it's supposed to be way in the future.

By the way - I'd give JK one.

You see I didn't make it clear that Ms Rowling was pleasuring herself with a Voodoo dildo all though the sketch, which obviously makes it the best gag ever. It was just so obvious I assumed everybody knew that!

Exactly, what ISN'T funny about a voodoo dildo?! I still stand by that, now you bring it up, you f**king smart-arse. Laughing out loud

If it's set in the future then it works. This needs to be made clear in the script.

I think I have a problem that my writings here apart from my sitcom (which is my real interest) are basically ideas that I just have to write down, with little or no editing. In fact most editing happens after they are posted. Some work, some don't, and some are just misudnderstood due to me leaving something obvious out. Yes she's meant to be old, as it's a fairly obvious take on the yellow pages ad. The joke is in how the JK Rowling is pronounced at the end. Is it any good, erm well probably not.

Am I a smart-arse, erm well yes. Feed me a line and I'll bite I'm affraid. And yes a voodoo dildo is funny, in fact so much so it seemed out of place in what read like a drama to me. (Hey I better BUMP that thread heh James)

I thought that was obvious because JK is not yet an old woman.

Clearly not obvious to me or a number of other readers. I thought there *had* to be some angle and did ask Rob in my first post :( My only disagreement was with anyone who thought it was really funny without that angle. In fact I've read it through again and it makes no mention of her being an old woman. It's not a bad sketch, all it needs is to explicitly point out is it's JK as an old woman. That's an assumption that some readers have made. Assumption is not enough, it has to be written in.

BUMP?
I don't know what you mean. But then, I probably don't want you to explain it to me either. Funnily enough most people I know didn't immediately "get" The Office, and that was being performed. I'm afraid any talk of it being a drama is short-sighted bollocks. :)
Whistling nnocently

Back on-topic I liked the sketch! I'm saying I like it and you're having a go! Rolling eyes

Aaaanyway, I thought part of the point of posting things like this up is so people can point out obvious mistakes/omissions?

...Like my script, where I apparently omitted all the jokes Teary Laughing out loud

Rob. I liked your sketch... much!

If it was stated at the start it would be obvious - although it was to me anyway.

Yes I agree, it is after all critique. However I'm at somewhat of a disadvantage as I don't really like sketches. However you can't keep posting bits of sitcom can you. The sketches are ideas that appear that can't fit into my sitcom, and I have no idea to use them ever, so perhaps I shouldn't post them but I do just to annoy people.
Strangely I find its my worst sketches (well at least as I see them) that seem to rack up the most comments. Admittedly this sketch isn't great, and the other I posted today about the bible is atleast 4 times better, but get 1/4 of the comments.

As for your script James, as I said before I'm not sure why you deliberately toned down the humour when its one of your obvious talents, so much as it was bound to get a negative response (as has this)

Have re-edited to make this point. But lets be honest its a silly gag anyway so who cares

I know - i'm not complaining

Er...what is going on?

Please can someone tell me what I'm missing here as although I 'got' it IMHO this just isn't funny.
("A sense of humour" goes without saying, so don't say it!)

The original JR Hartley ad was rather poignant as it obviously referred to a rarity written in his 'day' however JKR's books have sold in their multi-millions and for whatever their literary worth will be in the public subconscious (at least) for many a day to come.
Therefore the piece lacks both humour AND poignancy so has no point.

What I find doubly amazing is that other people who I have the highest regard for and whose opinion I usually respect have praised this.

Oh boy!

But in 50 years time everyone may have realised what shit it all is and given them to charity shops

Yes, and they'll be readily available.

Oh, what's the point?!

I dunno really

Now, that's funny! :D

Was this sketch written simply because JR Hartley sounds ever so slightly like JK Rowling? Why not make it JR Ewing...

Have you got any DVD boxsets of Dallas? Yes, you have. Gee, that's great. My name? JR Ewing.

Obv, not all sketches are topical, but this one sets out to appear topical - why else lead it on the world's top selling author? As such, it just doesn't work.
