Terrible actors in good films Page 11

But Rickman has the acting chops to go over the top, whereas Oldman just doesn't.

And while I think about it:

Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona (thanks for the prompt).

My God man, he's superb in that film!

Yes he is! It is just very other film he has been in I have the problem with.

I am so confused about this thread.

"Actors who normally bring you out in hives but who succeeded in starring in a good film without ruining it."

It's not that complicated!!

(This is why I should never start threads...)

You seem to dislike so many actors. Almost all male so far, though. Sexist.

:D

Okay, I think I get it.

You and me both. I read the title and thought, say, Danny Dyer in Severance, or Casper Van Dein in Starship Troopers (though he's perfectly cast in that film). All round shitty performers in great movies.

Yeah, come on, where's Tara Reid in all this?!

Chicks are just not that memorable, but I gave la Streisand a name check a few pages back, and you can have Sandra Bullock as a twofer with Keanu in Speed.

Gaaaaaaaay.

It is more that I - like Hollywood producers - am not necessarily that concerned by their acting ability...

Erm... right, not sure where to go with that.

It is just that most actresses tend to be quietly competent, since showing off is not so prized in women. Of course there are plenty of female equivalents of Reeves or Wahlberg, whose career is based less on their acting ability than on their appeal to the opposite sex, but so long as they work at that level I tend not to take much notice of them.

It is probable that handsome beefcakes make more of an impression on female filmgoers, as these are fewer and further between, most male film stars being distinctly on the homely side.

Joss Ackland is actually rather good (his C.S. Lewis in the original version of Shadowlands was far superior to that dreadful ham Hopkins). I do not know the film you mention, but I grant you that McKenna is usually fairly awful.

But are they good in it? To qualify for the thread the film has not to be marred by their presence.

Hm Burton and Hopkins, there are same names to think about... I might be able to come up with some decent films for the latter, but Burton? it is going to be a challenge...
