Hello! My name is Raul and I'm a Romanian standup comedian.
For the past months, here, in Romania, we had the pleasure to have a few English speaking comedians to do some gigs. They were guys from UK, Australia, New Zeeland, Canada and so on. Their shows were mostly well received by Romanian audience, despite the different pop cult references, the different type of humour and sometimes complex English phrasing. So, after talking to them and seeing that the issues of standup comedy are pretty relatable, worldwide, I thought of doing some shows in the UK, to see how our kind of humour will be received by the brits.
So, I'm planning to have a standup comedy tour with another Romanian comedy.
Here's our story
Teo has been doing stand up for nearly 10 years now. He is responsible for creating the boom in Romanian standup comedy. In 2007, stand up was a rather new thing and mainly disregarded by general audiences'. They were skeptical, because they only had shows like Seinfeld for reference. And then he posted a video on YouTube of one of his bits. The video went viral and that led the way for other comedians being discovered and enjoyed by the public. He is also part owner of the best standup comedy club in Romania, Club 99.
I am Raul and, unless someone new pops up in the scene, I'm the youngest comedian in Romania. I've been doing this for about 3 years, doing opening shows for pretty much everybody, and a few shows of my own or with my mates, a group called The Aristocrats. When I don't do stand up, I work for a well known Romanian satire magazine, something like The Onion.
So we're a couple of Romanian comics, with a firm grasp of English, and we want to do a standup comedy tour in Britain. In English, of course.
We thought that we could definitely market the whole tour as an immigrant tour. We both have material dealing with the immigration issue, gypsies, the workers permits scandal, the horse meat scandal and other hot topics. But, besides that, we are good comedians and we want to make people laugh. We're not looking to make a tour for money, we just want to cover our costs and enjoy ourselves in the UK.
So, if there are any club owners, comedians or people connected please give me some information:
First of all, how feasible do you think this endeavour is?
Do you reckon we could find any clubs that we can book for one night?
Do you think that clubs are willing to give up a night for a show that has
never happened before in Britain?
Do you think British audiences will be interested in this kind of show?
Do you think there's a chance to link the shows in order to have... I don't know, let's say a two week tour.
Any other kind of info
This is the research phase. We're trying to get an agent to do this from now on.
Thanks in advance for all the support. Or screw you in advance if you don't reply.
