Top Cat

Had a look around the site but can't see a thread for this gem. Apologies if there is one tucked away somewhere.

For those who don't know this is pretty much a cartoon version of Bilko, even down to the guy who played Pvt. Doberman (Maurice Gosford) voicing Benny the Ball.

I bought the box set a while ago and have just started watching it and it's still great stuff. You can get all 30 episodes (always believed there were more but seemingly not) for a mere £11.50 on Amazon. Worth it in my opinion.

A lot of people don't know this, but the show was originally called Top Wasp...

Image

Apparently they tested the pilot with an audience though, and the feedback they got was that the wasp angle wasn't popular. People complained they couldn't hear the dialogue over the sound of his buzzing and found it weird that all Top Wasp's friends were cats...

Image

Another objection was the end of the episode when he murdered Officer Dibble by injecting his head with deadly venom...

Brilliant yo time waister

Yeah, a lot of shows fell into the wasp protagonist trap back in those days. Anyone remember before they re-tooled this one?

From memory...
"Top Cat, the most effectual Top Cat,
He's intellectual,
Close friends come to call on T C,
Supposing there's whipped cream for tea,
Top Cat, the the indisputable leader of the gang,
He's the biz, he's the whizz, he's the number one jizz(surely not?)
He's the most tip-top, Top Cat!"

Isn't it 'championship' or something?

Laughing out loud @ Bussell

Ah, Top Cat. Always been my favourite cartoon. Since childhood. Probably because of my fondness for Bilko.

Think you'll find it's:

"...Close friends get to call him T.C,
Providing it's with dignity.
Top Cat, the indisputable leader of the gang,
He's the boss, he's the vip, he's the championship (quite right, Zooo)
He's the most tip top, Top Cat!"

By the way, my Beswick collection:

Didn't Mitchell & Webb point out Officer Dibble should worry more about drugs and prostitution, rather than a slightly criminal feline?

Your version makes more sense, but I prefer mine.

As a kid I remember being somewhat confused by the title-sequence.
He was quite patently & audibly called Top Cat.
Yet the title came up as" Boss Cat"?
Didn't discover the truth till years later.

I must say I like the idea of whipped cream for tea.
