For those who don't know, Beppe Grillo is the Italian comedian-turned-politician whose "Five-Star Movement" came third in the recent General Election in the country. I was wondering if anyone here knows more about his career as a comedian. Do we have an Italians here who might be able to provide more info?

I was recently watching Richard Herring's Hitler moustache tour in which he was making comparisons with comedians and dictators.
Listening to Grillo he does sound like he wants to be one of Italy's men of destiny who is above the no-good politicians that run your life.

But apparently he can never hold office because of the manslaughter conviction.

Sure, Signor Grillo is something of a hero out here. After a bunch of bunga-bunga tarts like Berlusconi or never-really-has-beens like Bersani he's a valid and exciting alternative and it's remarkable that in a country as traditionalistic as Italy he's not only made a stand (not in the Berlusconi sense) but garnered a respectable following. Check out his blog in English at http://www.beppegrillo.it/en/
