The only Mantel I've read is Eight Months On Gazza Street. A really chilling portrait of life in Saudi Arabia. I don't know why I've not read more as that was excellent.

Quote: youngian @ February 19 2013, 2:27 PM GMTYou don't need an executive Presidential system. There wouldn't be a conflict if you are a constitutionally bound ceremonial president like Ireland. There have had some dullards but the better ones like the two Marys didn't come from a party poltical background.
If you get the job right like the Queen they can stay around for life if that's what people wanted.
If you get some idiot like Prince Charles as head of state well we can boot them out after a single term.
I know, theoretically. I just don't trust that it would happen to our pleasing. I don't trust our government, I don't trust whoever would be president, I don't trust our system to make this happen reasonably. *Puts colander on head and hides under duvet*
The anti-royal sentiments here today have really cheered me out of a bad mood. As my father used to say 'Stand them up against a wall and shoot them.' (He was a member of the Communist Party at one time If any of you watched the recent programme about Queen Victoria('s Children), all I can say is I suspect the personalities are still the same - must be genes or something.

What was your story about being a child and there being a fella in your garden?!

Found it. My recollection is a bit worrying
Quote: keewik @ April 22 2012, 11:49 PM BSTWell, my recollections of being at a party (in my youth) with the Mayor of Leningrad, is that it was just a party. *thinks - does that explain the wee man with moustache and sunglasses who hangs about the bottom of my garden?*

I'd forgotten that one. Then there was the time I was tailed after performing poetry at a Communist rally. Well, when I say 'tailed' it might have been an actual spy trying to recruit me. How else would you interpret being approached by a total stranger with a Russian accent at a bus stop in outer Glasgow, and he states 'This is like Spring in Siberia'?

Well, I think that if dear Hilary is going to be doling out venom, she might as well receive a little constructive criticism herself. And, you know, when I looked at her picture, it came to me immediately who she reminds me of. Are any of you Brits familiar with Mad Magazine here in the States?
This woman Hilary could easily pass as Alfred E. Neumann's long lost mother! See for yourself--
I really can't see the problem here. Isn't it true? And wasn't Diana regarded in the same way at the time?

Are you really unaware of how vicious and hypocritical you're being?
