One Foot In The Grave

Just surprised nobody has started a thread on this brilliant sitcom. For me the best sitcom since the 1970's. Favourite episodes:
1. Love and Death
2. Hearts of Darkness
3. The Beast in the Cage

Just a brilliant sitcom.

I agree it was brilliant - but I've no idea which episode is which.

I like the one with the teacher from Please Sir who leaves Victor his collection after his death.

You're getting two episodes mixed up here Dave. The only episode to feature a teacher from 'Please Sir' is Monday Morning will be Fine (Series 3, episode 1). The man who leaves Victor his collection after his death is Brian Murphy in The Man who Blew Away (Series 5 episode 1). Brian Murphy wasn't in Please Sir, he is most famous for playing George in 'George and Mildred'

Collection of what? French porn? World cheeses?

I think this has to be one of the most experimental mainstream shows ever. David Renwick really did try to do different things each series, and often delighted in shrinking the action to a traffic jam or waiting room. And then ending it all by killing Victor, and having his wife kill the driver was dark genius.

What was everybody's opinions on Renwick killing off the Victor Meldrew character?

Right move or was there another series do you think.

Well given the ponderous and totally unfunny love soup you'd have to say he didn't really have another series in him.

Didn't Richard Wilson say he didn't want to do any more, hence the killing of the character?

Well yes but do you think he and Renwick made the right decision.

Yes, I think so. Not really any chance of the BBC bringing it back as a desperate attempt to grab ratings.

There is no chance of this programme comeing back, I do like it very funny.

I actually find Meldrew quite reasonable and his wife an annoying moaner, but it's a brilliantly plotted show, although Renwick not much good at one-liners.

Thank God. He is far too talented in other areas to rely solely on one-liners.

No-one said anything about relying on them. He derives most of his humour from set-pieces - which are undeniably brilliant and funny. I just think it's a shame he doesn't get more humour in in the dialogue. I'm still a fan.

Just feel current mainstream sitcom attempts are relying a little too much on one liners.
