British Comedy Guide

Jo Brand

I was quite surprised to find there was no thread dedicated to Jo.

She's been a stalwart of British Comedy with her regular appearances on every Quiz / Panel show ever recorded.

I remember the first time I ever her on TV, she was so different, opinionated and outspoken it was refreshing. Now I find her tired and boring.

Her appearance on Jonathan Ross this weekend was so littered with old jokes, it was embarrassing. Cheggers would have been crucified for the same, I suppose that's what happens when comedians turn into household names.

Write some new material Jo, the public deserve it, especially if you're going to be an expert judge on Splash! every week.

I don't much watch much modern comedy

But in her day was aces so as far as I'm concerned she still is

F**k you Thatcher, Friday Night Live showed you.

Now I find her tired and boring.

You're only human 'baby.

It's pointless talking about what Jo Brand was - I used to laugh at Ben Elton.

There is something really lame and disgusting about about a well-established performer moaning for twenty years about how awful she looks naked or the state of her fanny or her husband's sexual inadequacy.

I heart Jo Brand very much.
But I do agree that the material we get to see on telly sometimes seems more repeated than others.
And I wonder if this is because we remember it more because every other female working in mainstream comedy is reluctant to talk about looking awful naked or their vagina or their sex life with their partner because whenever someone attempts it they get berated with claims that they're just trying to be Jo Brand, or various 'that's so obvious/typical/done' withering comments for having the cheek to attempt talking about a key part of their lives or identities.
Or, having seen Jo Brand on the recent BBC programme 'Gags to Riches' discussing how she doesn't do corporate gigs like so many of her peers, she features more often in programmes that are an opportunity to feature material rather than only appearing on scripted TV shows that someone else has written or appearing less regularly cos she pays her mortgage behind the scenes.

:) A Jo Brand thread! Er I'm so excited I've lost the power of written communication...I'll have a Mars bar to re-energize my overloaded brain. Munch. Hmm that's better. Erm, 'A Mars a day makes you look that way.'

Let's face it, her comedic ascociation with the Mars bar was a PR catastrophe for the company.

I don't mind the woman at all, I'm not sure she was ever as groundbreaking as some think she was, I thought she was just another female comedian with an act. If anyone lays claim to the fat women are funny movement it's Victoria Wood, a greater talent than most of them since her put together, certainly of the stand up variety. Brand probably added a post watershed angle but then again, not too sure she could call it her own. Joan Rivers springs instantly to mind.

Brand is at her best on panel shows imo. Mainly because her own act is a bit stale now tbh. But if her panel show work dries up then she could earn a good income by charging Ms Millican royalties.

I understand Jo may not be to everyone's taste and her range of material is a tad limited for a full-length series. But for me she's wonderful - smart, cocky, deliciously rude! I still laugh at some of her lines and given that I heard them at uni that means 20 years ago. And I don't mean this as sexist, it's just a fact, even now the best way to a producer's heart is through his scrotum (Cheryl Cole, she's so... talented). So extra special kudos to Jo for making it in one of the most notoriously sleazy worlds known to the human race. I love her!

I have noticed her use a couple of old jokes recently. As in ones that I've heard loads of times. But maybe she actually was the one who came up with them 20 years ago? If so, fair enough, frankly!

I always enjoy her on QI, etc.

I think one shouldn't underestimate the talent it takes to have such a long and successful career in stand up. To me, though I'm not a huge fan of her work as of late (though that has more to do with my taste than her work as such), she's one of the icons of British comedy and I have nothing but the utmost respect for her.

Splash.WTF!!

I'm here cos I can swim and I was pushed into a pool once for being fat.

Maybe they will let me judge masterchef on account of me being a competent eater and occasionally visit restaurants.

She's the best chair on HIGNFY.

Or perhaps because she presented a whole series of this a year or so ago... https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/jo_brands_big_splash/

Ahhh now it all makes sense :$

Heh. They often have random comedian judges though on these things. So it wouldn't have surprised me even if she hadn't had a tenuous watery link.
