THE most underrated band of all time... Page 9

This is where the whole underrated debate lies, I mean, what really makes a band underrated?

I suppose in my mind, an underrated band is one who should have had more recognition and commercial success based on the quality of their music, as well as being acclaimed for influencing the direction of the music scene in general.

Some of the bands mentioned on this thread either a) sold a billion albums and were praised by the music press or b) were so tiny as to not even properly exist in the first place.

That's why I was confused when someone mentioned Beck as underrated. He's been one of the most successful and critically acclaimed artists of recent-ish times. I don't understand how he has been underrated.

I guess it really is all subjective in the end and with that in mind, I'm gonna chuck in This Mortal Coil.

I loved Silver Sun, first album in particular. Despite some very early heat, nothing much seemed to happen for them. I've had their debut album for about fifteen years, but still play it often. I imagine many won't have heard of them, or think I'm talking about Silversun Pickups.

Thee was a great band called 'No Dice' (great in an early Faces sort of way).
Looked like they were going somewhere then fizzled out.
Great live.

Plus a mention for Dr Feelgood, who are only now being acknowledged as an important bridge between Pub Rock & Punk.

Ultrasound never got their due. One great, bloated, over the top, brilliant album, then gone. 15 years later they've just released album number two, and it's great.

According to the 'Great Big Book Of Rock' (a publication that I just made up), the most underrated band ever were Canadian metal gods Anvil.

Elastica were hugely underrated IMO

Their debut album was bloody brilliant

Yes; theirs was the first proper album I bought, and I still listen to it now. Great shame they dropped into a druggy, weird hole and fell apart.

Cool yep I sill listen to it too

Good punky/new wavey/pop

There second album , the Menace, wasn't as good but is a decent album too

Oh and Justine was a fox back in the day

Yeah, some good songs in there.

The Velvet Underground never broke through 'Cult Status' nor did Sly & the Family Stone.
This is a great shame as the Velvets were singing about the problem of heroin before we had even won the world Cup in 66 and Sly Stone brought Funk to the world but for me never got the recognition he deserves.

Cardiacs.

You can lock the thread now.

Nick Drake is underrated. Not as much now as he was when he was alive, but his music isn't heard anywhere near enough. His first two albums are sublime.

I liked The Cooper Temple Clause's first two albums, but their third one was very tired sounding.

Any Trouble were a great pop band at the time of power pop and post punk. However Clive Gregson never looked cool enough to be a rock star. They made a brilliant first album on Stiff. Then their third I think it was on EMI America had some fantastic tracks such as "Please don't stop" - one of my fave songs of all time.

Some of the Connelly stuff is good, but its really for Rafferty that I like them

I've only heard the Rafferty Humblebums tunes, which is fine by me. Speaking of Rafferty, Stealers Wheel belong on this list as well. 'Ferguslie Park' is one of the greatest albums of the 70s IMHO. :)

Would not disagree, though my favourite track, Steamboat Row, was originally recorded by the Humblebums.
