I'm always interested in the various pronunciations people have for the same word, so thought we could have a chat about our tongues.
I pronounce Yorkshire as 'York-shur', but everyone else at my work pronounces it as 'York-shear'. Incidentally, I also pronounce salt as 'sawlt' - I sort of draw out the 'all' sound, but people tell me I'm wrong and should pronounce it as 'soult'.
I'd say 'shire' like 'shy' with an 'r' at the end. I'd say 'salt' the same way as you but shorter.
Actually that's me being polite, I realise. In normal conversation I'd probably say 'shir' like 'bit' or 'sit'.
My accent has become so disjointed with me purposely pronouncing stuff in stupid ways that I have no idea what my original dialect sounds like because I sound like no one around my way.
I suppose I say it - "York-sha". But me being a big knob, I normally accentuate the SHIRE because well, it's a very British word (to me).
I tend to affect a more Northern accent in general because that makes me laugh. So it's all "Put wood in 'ole" and "Up the wooden hill" from me.
