Apparantly the sequel 'Atlantic Felch' is already in the works... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A85EtOalcsM
- Looks like it could actually be a decent movie

Gotta love optimism. Let's ignore the fact that Guillermo Del Toro has never made a great film outside of his native Spain, but even with a gargantuan budget, this has B movie written all over it. The next King Kong / Godzilla crap fest.
This is going to be all sauce and no meat.

B movie with a gargantuan budget?
Sounds like nearly every film made by mainstream Hollywood since Jaws and Star Wars
You say "Del Toro has never made a great film outside of his native Spain". I would argue that Hollywood lets Del Toro be the fanboy. He is a comicbook geek and his only three English language movies have all been based on a comic character. His next English language Directing project is the pilot episode of The Incredible Hulk.
I like Del Toro because you know what type of film to expect regardless of the language he is using.
You are right though, Pacific Rim may end up being awful

I like Del Toro too and think he's immensely talented, but once you strip away the visuals - just like with Peter Jackson and Tim Burton - you get very bad storytelling and film making.
Every time I see the trailer for Pacific Rim, I'm reminded of Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus.
As for European directors taking on comic book heroes - *cough* Chris Nolan *cough*
Yeah, its hard to look forward to the new Superman film when it has the writers of The Dark Knight Rises and the director of Sucker Punch
I hate it when a director comes along and I think 'Yes! This guy gets it.' and then they turn into everything I hate about Hollywood.
John Woo, Zack Snyder, Quentin Tarantino, the aforementioned Jackson, Del Toro and Burton but worst of all, Kevin Smith.
It looks like a bag of shite floating in a lake of shite.
The creature from Cloverfield versus the Power Rangers.
I look forward to it, he's a great director. Pity his adaptation of HP Lovecraft's Mountains of Madness fell through, though. That would have been way more fun.
The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan is worth a read for yet another take on the vampire mythos. Its actually not that bad.
TV series might be on the way: http://www.hitfix.com/news/guillermo-del-toros-the-strain-vampire-book-trilogy-becoming-a-tv-series
