Here is a very weird story from America that some of you might get a kick out of -

There is an ex-military firearms instructor called James Yaeger and he is so sick and tired of people on the Internet calling him a coward that he has issued an 'official duel' to anyone who wants to fight. He gained notoriety after real combat footage involving a Private Security Detail in Iraq was released on You Tube.

According to the after action report, Yaeger ran away when his vehicle was fired upon and left his comrades to die. He now runs tactical classes in Tennessee and is pretty much a steroided, publicity hungry, douchebag.

An entirely ridiculous story that shows nothing more than the folly of handling so much of Iraqs security to independent contractors (mercernaries), in ordinary vehicles. That this inexperienced, adrenalised douche bag was in charge of security for Iraqi election monitors. Is just plain depressing.

He's not a coward.

I've actually met a couple of guys who did PSD work in Iraq. When they were hired they were promised armoured vehicles, the best equipment, good living quarters, etc.

When they got there, it was a different story and the companies who hire out the private contractors were raking in the dough as the grunts on the ground were put in unbelieveable danger. These guys were doing twelve hour days in extreme heat and in unarmoured vehicles for £250 a day.

The Iraq war was in many ways the nadir of recent western adventurism.

It's interesting how few mistakes from it were replicated in the Afghan war. But the idea that you could write a cheque and the issues of everything from diplomatic protection, to street level security was bonkers. And should stay as a very stark warning about what some think tanks are considering when they talk about privatisation.
