Sitcom scene length

Wonder if any of you all knowing sage's can help.
My sitcom episode has a couple of scenes that are about 3-4 mins when I timed them. Is there an acceptable max scene length?
Is it just a case of ruthless editing?

Thanks all.

Whatever is necessary. You can have one long scene if you're brave enough. In this day and age, what with people's short attention... span! Something that is quick and pacey might get a better look in than something that is not.

There are no rules to writing, some things are tried and tested and are proved to work but that doesn't mean other ways won't work either.

I'm hardly the doyen of comedy writing, but back in my uni days I got a piece of advice about stand-up and while it ain't Confucious I've always remembered it and found it useful: If you do just one minute and it's all great, people will think you are all great, and want to see more. If you do ten minutes with more great stuff but some dead wood too, they'll remember you as hit and miss and be less enthusiastic next time around.
Evan S. Smith's 'Writing TV Sitcoms' suggests a mantra when you're looking over your scriptwriting: 'Does the audience really need to know this?' If no, cut it. If yes, ask 'Do they need to know it NOW'? If no, cut it!
Like I said, I'm not exactly a sage, but I've always found these comments helpful.

Thank you chaps.

I have taken heed. Got the chopper out.....

Thanking you kindly.

And of course an episode of Psychoville had a scene lasting half an hour...
